My Mission

Improve Understanding

I offer lessons to students that are studying towards exams, helping them to become fully prepared for their exam. Music theory can sometimes feel slightly overwhelming for students, so I'd love to help all students achieve the level of understanding they need to progress.

I can take on beginners as well as more advanced learners, including students who are simply learning for their own interest rather than taking exams. Whatever your level, we will always learn at a pace that works for you. I really think that little and often is the best way to learn difficult topics and musical theory is definitely one of those, where carefully unpacking complex topics can achieve great results. I intend to make my lessons as informative as they are enjoyable for all.

My Experience as a Teacher

I have been teaching for 20 years, both privately and as a University Lecturer. During this time, I have taught piano, theory, composition, and music production to hundreds of students and clients, ranging from complete beginners to professional musicians and other teachers. I have prepared students for public performances and successful auditions at universities and specialist music schools (for example, Chetham’s, Leeds Conservatoire, RNCM). I have also maintained a 100% student examination pass rate (up to and including diploma), mostly with distinction. Recent success stories include students who achieved 74/75 for ABRSM Grade 5 Theory and 146/150 for Piano Practical.

One of my students’ was invited to take part in a special concert organised by the ABRSM after they achieved one of the highest marks during the Spring period. My students have been successful prize winners in various music festivals and competitions and have attained excellent results during school and college examinations (for example, many have achieved either a grade A or an A* in their GCSE music exams).

Lessons can be configured to support and complement work undertaken for GCSE and AS/A level music. They can also be designed to improve general musicianship, including sight reading, aural skills, improvisation, and aspects of composition. I have had success with students of all ages and abilities, from 3 to 75.

More About My Lessons

Teaching methods are adapted to suit the individual needs and abilities of the student, involving an analysis of both the way a student learns music and the way that they perform.

Strategies can then be developed to overcome specific musical and technical difficulties or to find a suitable approach to the music in question.

I am also able to help with issues of exam anxiety, and can suggest various strategies and techniques to reduce or minimise its effects. In addition, I offer online tuition in piano, composition, and music production. I can work with any of the major communication platforms including FaceTime, Skype, Teams, WhatsApp, and Zoom.
