Welcome to
Hi everyone, my name is Alanna Macfarlane & I'm a professional musician with over 7 years of experience in teaching & I'm now happy to offer the chance for students to take my online music theory lessons to brush up on their understanding of music and theory in general. Music theory is often brushed aside but I believe that all musicians should have a solid understanding of it.
I have many students that are studying towards exams and just need that extra push forward to become fully prepared for their exam. I think that theory can be overlooked when it's essential that you understand why you're playing what you're playing. I'd love to help all students achieve the level of understanding they need to progress and start to connect the dots when it comes to music.
I can take on beginners as well as more advanced learners. Whatever your level, we will always learn at a pace that works for you. I really think that little and often is the best way to learn difficult topics and musical theory is definitely one of those, which is why so many can lose motivation along the way. I intend to make my lessons as informative as they are enjoyable for all.

I like to present my lessons in an easy to understand manner where you can feel comfortable learning at a pace that works for you. My lessons will contain all the information you need whilst making sure you go away with many ways to remember certain aspects of theory.
I have experience helping students with ABRSM Graded exams but I'm open to help students who are studying alternate exams. Just remember to let me know when you get in touch and we can make a learning plan together for when we move forwad.
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
I welcome beginners and advanced students in a wide range of styles and genres. I can also teach Bassoon as well as theory lessons.
I am a professional freelance musician with many years of teaching experience, offering bassoon lessons and music theory tuition. I have taught both privately and through Music Services for seven years. I have experience with entering pupils for ABRSM grades as well as lessons for fun and professional development teaching.
I started playing instruments when I was 4. My very first instrument was the recorder and then I started learning the clarinet and trumpet a few years later. I then started playing the bassoon as a teenager and my musical career took off.
During my later years of school, I was lucky enough to play in youth orchestras and I absolutely fell in love with it and I feel so privileged to be making in to my career.
I have a pupil-centred approach to teaching, encouraging exploration of what a pupil connects with and is enthused by musically.
I aim to give a wide overview of music in my teaching by developing a natural link with music theory as the pupil learns the notes, instrumental techniques and skills.
I encourage playing with others in ensembles where possible and I aim to play a duet most lessons to work on both aural and sight-reading skills. My love of teaching comes from my passion for expression through music and encouraging my pupils to explore and progress.
In the past, many have avoided learning online but these days I truly believe it is the best way to learn something with an experienced teacher from the comfort of your own home. As long as you have a computer with a decent internet connection then you're good to go. Many students even use tablets and Ipads to take lessons these days which can be just as easy.
My online lessons are no different to my face to face lessons and are always conducted in a professional manner. I will make sure every lesson is built around your ability level and that we chose a video calling platform that works for you.
I'm a professional musician with over 7 years teaching experience who can help you develop your understanding of music theory. My lessons are tailor made to the individual and we will always work at a pace that suits you. I will always make sure everything is explained clearly and in an easy to understand manner. For more information, please feel free to send me an email.
[email protected]My lessons are charged at £24 per half hour and £48 per hour for all students taking my thoery classes.
All of my lessons are taken via video call from the comfort of your own home.
I teach students of all ages but obviously for more in depth theory, this is not suitable for young children for obvious reasons.
A weekly lesson is always the best way to keep on top of your learning journey and make sure you retain information well.
If a pupil/parent/guardian cancels a lesson on the day the lesson is scheduled for that lesson must be paid for in full. Similarly, if I cancel a lesson on the day the lesson is scheduled for the next lesson will be free. If the pupil is running late the lesson may not be extended past the agreed time and the scheduled slot must be paid for in full. Exceptions may be made in extenuating circumstances.
