Hello
My name is Hugh Strathern. I am a professional singing teacher based in Cardiff. Fortunate enough to have spent ten years working as a member of Only Men Aloud, I have plenty of experience which informs my teaching and helps my students. I offer singing lessons for all ages and abilities, teaching people who want to pass exams, or for those preparing for auditions, or people who just want to sing because they enjoy it – for the love of singing. I cater all my lessons towards the aims of the student.
Pretty much whatever you want to sing I am willing to teach you, as over the years I have taught, which is more than 15 years now, I have taught most genres of singing from classical and opera, to legit and contemporary music theatre, pop, R&B, jazz, soul, funk, rock and heavy metal.
I also teach the piano and keyboard skills as well as music theory to intermediate and advanced levels.
All my lessons are taught in a relaxed, informal style at my home studio in Cardiff.
My background is manily in classical music and classical contemporary crossover.
After studying for a Masters degree in music, I completed a Postgraduate diploma in vocal studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After my studies, I worked as a chorister for the BBC National Chorus of Wales, Welsh National Opera, the Swansea Bach Choir, Bournmouth Symphony Chorus, the Three Choirs Festival and the John S Davies Singers.
I was lucky and privileged enough to be a member of Only Men Aloud for over ten years, during which time, I had the opportunity to record two albums on major record labels (Sony and Decca), take part in numerous national and international tours, as well as TV broadcasts, sing in the opening ceremony of the Olympics and win a Classical BRIT, not to mention The BBCs Last Choir Standing competition in 2008!
My varied performmance experience has been invaluable in terms of being able to impart knowledge and guidance to my students over the years, whatever their aims.
I have a particular interest in singing techniques and in helping people improve this, whether to get better in general or just to be able to sing that one high note that always seems to be out of reach. Sometimes people come with vocal issues issues as well, such as hoarseness, loss of voice, breathiness and huskiness and loss of range. All of these things can be improved by singing lessons and it’s always a joy to see a student able to either gain or get their own voice and confidence back, or be even better!
I look forward to hearing from you!
