Hello, my name is Gus Dolding and I teach guitar, tenor banjo and clarinet in Bristol. I have been a professional musician and teacher for over ten years, having been based in Bristol for the last six years. I play in a number of projects and specialise in early jazz, blues and folk music. I play tenor banjo, guitar and clarinet and I offer 1:1 tuition in Bristol to all ages and abilities. Lessons with me will help you grow in confidence, expand your repertoire and knowledge of different genres, find your own personal style, improve your rhythm and learn how to improvise. I can help students wanting to improve technically, increase their music theory knowledge, gain performance confidence or work on their compositions. I help students establish solid practise routines and I keep my lessons fun and enjoyable. My lessons can help you to improve your technique, establish practise routines, learn new songs, grow confidence in playing, play music with others and understand your instrument’s role in a band, understand rhythm, understand music theory, challenge your skills and enjoy the process of learning and playing music. The lessons will be fun and challenging and will allow you to focus on your own specific goals. Whether that be preparing a particular song or for a specific performance or audition, building confidence in live performance, to improve technique, to better understand the theory and mechanics behind the music you like or just to have some time focused on yourself and your hobby. Each lesson is specifically tailored to you but will typically begin with warm up exercises and will progress to working on particular pieces of music as well as spending some time on technique and theory to understand ‘why’ as well as ‘how’ music may be played. The lessons are positive, fun and friendly and are focused on your needs and ability. I hold a DBS certificate and regularly teach people of all ages, abilities and walks of life. Music Qualifications & Achievements: I have extensive performance experience, from leading UK festivals such as Glastonbury festival, Shambala and Boomtown to events in Europe such as Ferrara Buskers Festival (IT) where I have performed as an invited act. I also helped found a project working with a multi-generational jazz band in community settings to deliver music workshops for older people and people with additional needs. I have toured in Europe and the US as well as the UK. I draw upon a a wealth of experience playing everything from high-profile events to weddings, music venues and corporate functions with a number of my projects. I studied an Extended Diploma (distinction) in music which has helped me to have a comprehensive understanding of theory, composition and performance. I am also a composer and create compositions for music libraries in my home recording studio.
All my lessons are driven by what you want to learn, whether it is Ed Sheeran, Cory Wong, John Petrucci or Jimi Hendrix, my lessons will help you play the music you love! I also offer both online and one to one guitar tuition, meaning I can travel to you to take guitar lessons from the comfort of your own home. This can be great for those who want to learn from a comfortable environment while learning to play the guitar.
As a guitar teacher, I rely on a depth of experience shaped by years of performing, teaching, and working in diverse professional environments—from classrooms to cruise ships to military ensembles. I feel that this background has not only strengthened my musicianship, but also provides a uniquely versatile teaching style that resonates with students of all ages, abilities, and learning preferences. I feel that my journey as a school teacher, a cruise-ship guitarist, and a musician in The British Army informs every lesson I teach with a wealth of real-world insight.

One to one lessons: Jack specialises in classical, acoustic and electric guitar, as well as music theory, with most genres covered. He tailors all his lessons to the individual needs of each student – whether you want to work your way up to Grade 8 on classical or electric guitar, strum your way through your favourite songs on acoustic, jam along with mates, or learn that Jimi Hendrix solo or Metallica riff. His lessons go above and beyond. He doesn’t like to spend quality time writing out homework or things to remember during the lesson – instead, he emails the pupil afterwards with a recap of what they’ve covered and suggestions of what to practice, meaning that you never forget anything from the lesson. He teaches his lessons in his dedicated music room in Camden, Bath. Band coaching: If you play regularly with other musicians Jack can also coach you in making a success of your group. He is a person of integrity who relates very well to all in our family, especially our son. He is punctual for all lessons, arriving at the house for lessons, and friendly and flexible in arranging lessons to meet the demanding schedule of our household. Jack prepares his lessons very well with a wide variety of activities which develop skills across the guitar’s musical range. He sends a written summary of what he has taught, with previously agreed activities, to practice for the next lesson. We highly recommend Jack as a guitar teacher.” Testimonial from Stephen: “I came to Jack Davies as a mature beginner wanting to learn the Classical Guitar. Jack listened to what I wanted and expected from the lessons and to my amazement, and within what appeared to be a relatively short period of time for learning a musical instrument (approximately 18/24 months) I had worked through two introductory books (Cracknell) and also had worked through several grade books (Trinity) and was able to work on, with confidence, and play grade 4/5 pieces. Jack is a very talented guitar teacher; with a vast wealth of knowledge and experience and enthusiasm; and is ‘bursting at the seams’ to share all of this. I found the lessons with Jack to be informative, instructional, stimulating and enjoyable, and I would leave each lesson feeling inspired.” Testimonial from Lilla (aged 11): “I had an amazing time learning to play the guitar. You taught me so much in just two and a half years! Thank you for encouraging me and being so patient. I will really miss you!” Thanks for looking!

Bath guitar tuition commonly covers both acoustic and electric guitar, and lessons are available for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players. A simple learning path to become a skilled musician
These three stages keep your guitar lessons focused, whether you’re learning acoustic, electric, classical, or bass. We adjust the pace for ages, experience, and goals.
Set up posture, tuning and timing. Learn essential chords, clean fretting and simple strumming or picking, then play short song sections with steady rhythm.
Add chord vocabulary, movable shapes, and practical music theory. Develop right-hand control, dynamics, and transitions, then learn complete songs across your chosen styles.
Refine technique, speed and consistency. Work on improvisation, tone for electric or articulation for acoustic, and prepare a set list for performing or recording.
Starter setup for your first lesson
You don’t need expensive gear. Start with reliable basics so lessons stay musical and you can practise without friction.
- Bring a playable guitar and a clip-on tuner; new strings help. For electric, bring a lead and a small amp or headphone option.
- Pack a pick variety, spare strings and a capo. A simple notebook or notes app keeps exercises, chords and weekly goals organised.
- Use a metronome app and a footstool or strap for posture. If you’re unsure, ask us before buying pedals or upgrades.

FAQs about guitar lessons in Bath
Many Bath teachers start with the basics: comfortable posture, tuning, and how to fret notes cleanly. If you’re a complete beginner, a great teacher will keep it fun and simple while building secure foundations. You’ll usually learn a couple of chord shapes or a simple riff, plus a straightforward practice plan so you know what to work on before the next lesson.

Lessons in Bath are commonly tailored to the student’s musical goals, taste, ability level, and learning style. This kind of lessons tailored approach helps parents feel confident that their son is supported as well as challenged. You don’t usually need music theory to begin, but it can make a big difference as you progress. For students interested in songwriting, tutors can also cover composition in a practical, guitar-first way.
This varies by student and goal, but many teachers recommend consistent, manageable practice. Lessons often come with a clear set of exercises (technique, timing, and a song focus) so practice time is specific rather than open-ended.
