Hello, my name is Sarah Dunbar and I am a professional singing teacher based in Cardiff, Wales. I have many years teaching experience, welcoming both young learners and adults to attend individually tailored singing lessons. I focus my lessons on helping students to develop their vocal strength, control and confidence, building their technical ability up through combining singing the songs that they are interested in with the vocal exercises that help to improve a student’s technique. My background is as an opera and classical singing, so I can certainly help students interested in learning these genres. I also teach contemporary styles of singing, like music theatre, jazz and folk. I have studied a Vocal Performance Masters at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, helping me to develop an extensive technical understanding of how the voice works. This is blended with an extensive CV as a performing singer, enabling me to draw upon both the theory and the practical aspects of singing when teaching my lessons. During my career onstage I have performed in numerous shows, often in front of large audiences, in venues across Europe. This includes playing Cleopatra in the UK world premiere of Hasse’s Marc Antonio e Cleopatra with Woodhouse Opera and working as a creative director of A La Canto, a singing waiters company that provides performances across the UK. All of this experience performing feeds into the lessons that I teach, helping students to build confidence to sing infront of others and giving them tips around stagecraft and handling nerves. I would be delighted to help you to learn to sing if you are interested, simply get in touch to find out more. Music Qualifications & Achievements: I started teaching singing because I have a passion for singing technique, you could call me a vocal nerd! Hello My name is Hugh Strathern. I am a professional singing teacher based in Cardiff. Fortunate enough to have spent ten years working as a member of Only Men Aloud, I have plenty of experience which informs my teaching and helps my students. I offer singing lessons for all ages and abilities, teaching people who want to pass exams, or for those preparing for auditions, or people who just want to sing because they enjoy it - for the love of singing. I cater all my lessons towards the aims of the student. Pretty much whatever you want to sing I am willing to teach you, as over the years I have taught, which is more than 15 years now, I have taught most genres of singing from classical and opera, to legit and contemporary music theatre, pop, R&B, jazz, soul, funk, rock and heavy metal. I also teach the piano and keyboard skills as well as music theory to intermediate and advanced levels. All my lessons are taught in a relaxed, informal style at my home studio in Cardiff. My background is manily in classical music and classical contemporary crossover. After studying for a Masters degree in music, I completed a Postgraduate diploma in vocal studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After my studies, I worked as a chorister for the BBC National Chorus of Wales, Welsh National Opera, the Swansea Bach Choir, Bournmouth Symphony Chorus, the Three Choirs Festival and the John S Davies Singers. I was lucky and privileged enough to be a member of Only Men Aloud for over ten years, during which time, I had the opportunity to record two albums on major record labels (Sony and Decca), take part in numerous national and international tours, as well as TV broadcasts, sing in the opening ceremony of the Olympics and win a Classical BRIT, not to mention The BBCs Last Choir Standing competition in 2008! My varied performmance experience has been invaluable in terms of being able to impart knowledge and guidance to my students over the years, whatever their aims. I have a particular interest in singing techniques and in helping people improve this, whether to get better in general or just to be able to sing that one high note that always seems to be out of reach. Sometimes people come with vocal issues issues as well, such as hoarseness, loss of voice, breathiness and huskiness and loss of range. All of these things can be improved by singing lessons and it's always a joy to see a student able to either gain or get their own voice and confidence back, or be even better! I look forward to hearing from you! Music Qualifications: MMus Music Performance UEA 2000 PGDip Vocal studies 2004

Singing lessons: what to expect
The best singing lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a coach who helps you build your voice safely and consistently. Search by location to find in-person singing lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist vocal coaches for pop, musical theatre, rock, classical, and exam preparation.
Singing lessons are for complete beginners through to experienced performers. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, and adults — whether you’re learning for fun, building confidence, joining a band or choir, or returning to singing after a break.
Most students work on breath control, pitch, tone, range, vocal agility, and song interpretation. A good vocal coach will also help you practise effectively, warm up safely, and build vocal stamina — so you improve without strain.
Online singing lessons can be highly effective for technique, consistency, and flexible scheduling — especially with an experienced coach. In-person lessons can feel more immersive and are great if you prefer face-to-face feedback and hands-on guidance.
A simple learning path for singing
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Learn healthy breathing, posture, warm-ups, and simple exercises to improve pitch accuracy and reduce strain while building confidence.
Develop stronger breath support, resonance and tone control, smoother transitions between registers, and start expanding your usable range.
Improve vocal agility, dynamics, phrasing and expression, build stamina for longer songs, and develop performance skills — tailored to your style and goals.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- No kit required: you can start with your voice, a phone recorder, and a quiet room.
- Hydration and warm-ups matter more than volume — good singing is built on consistency, not pushing.
- If learning online: headphones and a stable internet connection make lessons smoother.
