As a teacher, I believe that the only thing more important than having good, foundational instrumental technique is that you use that technique to explore and enjoy your instrument! I have been performing professionally as a bassist and classical guitarist for over a decade in concerts, shows and studio recordings in Cardiff, Bristol, Southampton and the South West. During my degree in Music and Philosophy, I spent a year studying Music Education at the Charles University of Prague. This inspired me to take a PGCE (Music) at the University of Bristol where I earned Qualified Teacher Status as a music teacher, before moving to Cardiff to teach music in primary and secondary schools. My teaching specialisms are classical guitar (Spanish guitar), bass guitar (rock, jazz, punk), ukulele (indie) and music production (Logic Pro X). Music Qualifications & Achievements: 5 years of Secondary and Primary school music teaching, including GCSE, A level and Music Technology BTEC PGCE (Music) BA Philosophy and Music (with Music Education Year Abroad), classical and bass guitar specialisms Classical Guitar – Grade 8 (Trinity Guildhall) Bass Guitar Performance – Mokono, The Sultans, The Bill Laurence Blueprint Project Volunteering with Plymouth Music Zone - Music Therapy
Hello there! My name is David. I have a bachelor in Music performance and production. I'm a South Wales based musician that has been fortunate enough to play music for a living for a while now. I studied music in college and university and started my first tour when I was in my last year of university. I've been fortunate enough to play for 1000s of people and even performing for some of the top leading companies in the world. I've really found my zone in playing for various musicians live and cutting my teeth so to speak in the live music industry playing with some of the best musicians in the country. This is in a wedding function, original music and tribute act setting. If you’re interested in learning from me who has experiences playing for artists and big shows, give me a message!
I am a professional instrumental music teacher offering private tuition in guitar, ukulele, bass guitar, and tres cubano. I hold a First Class Honours Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, one of the UK’s leading conservatoires, where I received rigorous training in performance, musicianship, and music education. My academic background, combined with extensive practical experience, allows me to support students with a wide range of musical interests and goals in a structured, informed, and encouraging manner. I teach students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners taking their first steps into music to more advanced players seeking to refine their technique, broaden their stylistic awareness, or prepare for graded examinations. Lessons are available both in person and online, allowing flexibility for students with different schedules and learning preferences. I place a strong emphasis on creating a supportive learning environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing confidence in their playing. My teaching covers all musical styles, including classical, rock, pop, jazz, blues, folk, and contemporary genres, as well as specialist styles relevant to the tres cubano and Latin music traditions. While stylistic exploration is encouraged, lessons are always grounded in solid fundamentals. These include posture and technique, tone production, rhythm and timing, fretboard knowledge, harmony, and ear training. Where appropriate, I also integrate music theory and notation in a clear, practical way, ensuring students understand not only what to play, but why it works musically. For students who wish to follow a formal pathway, I offer structured preparation for Rockschool, Trinity (Rock & Pop and Classical), and ABRSM Classical graded examinations. I am familiar with the technical requirements, repertoire expectations, and marking criteria of each syllabus, and I tailor lessons accordingly to ensure students are well prepared and confident on exam day. At the same time, I recognise that not every student’s goal is exam-based, and I am equally happy to support learners who wish to play purely for enjoyment, personal development, or creative expression. My approach to teaching is adaptable and student-centred. I believe that effective tuition balances clear structure with flexibility, allowing lessons to respond to individual interests, strengths, and challenges. Some students benefit most from a carefully planned technical progression, while others thrive when lessons are built around songs, improvisation, or creative projects. In all cases, I aim to develop independent musicianship, helping students build the skills and understanding needed to practise effectively and continue improving beyond the lesson itself. Above all, my goal is to help students develop a lasting and meaningful relationship with music. Whether a student is working towards formal qualifications, expanding their stylistic range, or simply learning to play for pleasure, I provide professional, reliable, and thoughtful tuition tailored to their needs. I welcome enquiries from students of all ages who are looking for high-quality instrumental lessons delivered with clarity, patience, and musical integrity.

- A few picks and a strap; comfort reduces tension and improves technique, especially when you’re building stamina and better rhythm.
- For electric, a small amp or headphone solution; for acoustic, a capo can help with songs in friendly keys.

Cardiff has one of the strongest live music scenes in Wales, with venues that range from grassroots clubs to larger touring rooms. A key starting point is Clwb Ifor Bach, a central venue known for supporting emerging artists alongside established acts, particularly across indie, rock, and alternative scenes. For larger shows and touring artists, Tramshed Cardiff offers a bigger stage experience, while The Globe Cardiff sits in the middle, hosting a wide mix of bands in a more intimate setting. Attending gigs regularly is one of the most effective ways to improve as a musician. Watching how bands structure songs, control dynamics, and interact on stage gives you practical ideas you can take directly into your own playing.
Cardiff has a small number of established music shops where you can try instruments in person and get practical advice. One of the main options is Gamlins Music Centre, a long-running local retailer offering guitars, accessories, and general support for players at different levels. For a wider range of guitars, pedals, and amplifiers, some players also travel to larger stores outside the city or order from established UK retailers once they know what they are looking for. For setups and repairs, many musicians in Cardiff rely on independent guitar technicians. A teacher is often the best source for a trusted recommendation, as a good setup can significantly improve tuning stability and overall playability.
Cardiff and the wider South Wales region have produced influential artists whose music provides practical learning material for guitarists and musicians. Stereophonics are one of the most closely associated bands with the area, known for their strong rhythm guitar work, clear song structures, and melodic lead lines that translate well into lessons. Shirley Bassey is a Cardiff-born artist whose recordings are useful for understanding arrangement, dynamics, and how instruments support powerful vocal performances. Cardiff is also closely connected to the wider Welsh music scene, which has a strong identity in rock, indie, and live performance culture. For students, studying artists from this region helps develop rhythm consistency, tone control, and an understanding of how songs are built for live audiences.
