As a teacher, I believe that the only thing more important than having good, foundational instrumental technique is that you use that technique to explore and enjoy your instrument! I have been performing professionally as a bassist and classical guitarist for over a decade in concerts, shows and studio recordings in Cardiff, Bristol, Southampton and the South West. During my degree in Music and Philosophy, I spent a year studying Music Education at the Charles University of Prague. This inspired me to take a PGCE (Music) at the University of Bristol where I earned Qualified Teacher Status as a music teacher, before moving to Cardiff to teach music in primary and secondary schools. My teaching specialisms are classical guitar (Spanish guitar), bass guitar (rock, jazz, punk), ukulele (indie) and music production (Logic Pro X). Music Qualifications & Achievements: 5 years of Secondary and Primary school music teaching, including GCSE, A level and Music Technology BTEC PGCE (Music) BA Philosophy and Music (with Music Education Year Abroad), classical and bass guitar specialisms Classical Guitar – Grade 8 (Trinity Guildhall) Bass Guitar Performance – Mokono, The Sultans, The Bill Laurence Blueprint Project Volunteering with Plymouth Music Zone - Music Therapy

I am a conservatoire trained, classical guitar specialist and teach it to the professional level, all other listed instruments to Grade 8 or equivalent standard, in a wide variety of styles. I am experienced in teaching all ages and I’m familiar with the common exam boards and their procedures. I maintain a 100% pass rate for students entered into exams, however, I do not force students to enter, having fun is the most important part of the music! I offer a free introductory session upon request and I encourage you to contact me with any questions. Being an active performer, I really value the importance of collaborations with other musicians and instruments. I believe playing with others is often overlooked in guitar teaching, despite it being a vital part of musical education and I try to incorporate this skill into my teaching. DBS certified. Music Qualifications & Achievements: MMus Scholar in Classical Guitar Performance, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (In Progress) BMus Hons, Royal College of Music Trinity Grade 8, Classical Guitar

I am a professional instrumental music teacher offering private tuition in guitar, ukulele, bass guitar, and tres cubano. I hold a First Class Honours Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, one of the UK’s leading conservatoires, where I received rigorous training in performance, musicianship, and music education. My academic background, combined with extensive practical experience, allows me to support students with a wide range of musical interests and goals in a structured, informed, and encouraging manner. I teach students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners taking their first steps into music to more advanced players seeking to refine their technique, broaden their stylistic awareness, or prepare for graded examinations. Lessons are available both in person and online, allowing flexibility for students with different schedules and learning preferences. I place a strong emphasis on creating a supportive learning environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing confidence in their playing. My teaching covers all musical styles, including classical, rock, pop, jazz, blues, folk, and contemporary genres, as well as specialist styles relevant to the tres cubano and Latin music traditions. While stylistic exploration is encouraged, lessons are always grounded in solid fundamentals. These include posture and technique, tone production, rhythm and timing, fretboard knowledge, harmony, and ear training. Where appropriate, I also integrate music theory and notation in a clear, practical way, ensuring students understand not only what to play, but why it works musically. For students who wish to follow a formal pathway, I offer structured preparation for Rockschool, Trinity (Rock & Pop and Classical), and ABRSM Classical graded examinations. I am familiar with the technical requirements, repertoire expectations, and marking criteria of each syllabus, and I tailor lessons accordingly to ensure students are well prepared and confident on exam day. At the same time, I recognise that not every student’s goal is exam-based, and I am equally happy to support learners who wish to play purely for enjoyment, personal development, or creative expression. My approach to teaching is adaptable and student-centred. I believe that effective tuition balances clear structure with flexibility, allowing lessons to respond to individual interests, strengths, and challenges. Some students benefit most from a carefully planned technical progression, while others thrive when lessons are built around songs, improvisation, or creative projects. In all cases, I aim to develop independent musicianship, helping students build the skills and understanding needed to practise effectively and continue improving beyond the lesson itself. Above all, my goal is to help students develop a lasting and meaningful relationship with music. Whether a student is working towards formal qualifications, expanding their stylistic range, or simply learning to play for pleasure, I provide professional, reliable, and thoughtful tuition tailored to their needs. I welcome enquiries from students of all ages who are looking for high-quality instrumental lessons delivered with clarity, patience, and musical integrity.

Guitar lessons: what to expect

Guitar lessons near you

The best guitar lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a teacher who helps you progress with clarity. Search by location to find in-person guitar lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist teachers for acoustic, electric, fingerstyle, rock, or grades.

Who guitar lessons are for

Guitar lessons work for complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced students. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, or adults returning to guitar — with a focus on the styles and songs you actually want to play.

What you’ll learn in guitar lessons

Most students work on chord fluency, rhythm, strumming feel, scales, finger placement, and repertoire. A good teacher will also structure your practice so you build confidence and technique without getting stuck.

Online vs in-person guitar lessons

Online guitar lessons can be highly effective, especially for busy schedules and specialist tuition. In-person lessons can feel more hands-on and are great if you prefer local support and face-to-face feedback.

A simple learning path for guitar

A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.

Weeks 1–4: Foundations
1

Learn posture, tuning, chord changes, strumming patterns, and how to practise without building bad habits.

Months 2–3: Songs & rhythm
2

Build a steady sense of timing, expand chord vocabulary (including barre chords), and play full songs with confidence.

Months 3–6: Technique & style
3

Develop picking, fingerstyle, lead basics, improvisation foundations, or exam preparation — depending on your goals.

Getting started: what you need

Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.

  • Acoustic vs electric: your teacher can recommend what fits your music taste and comfort.
  • A tuner + a few picks is enough to start — then add a capo or strap as you progress.
  • A simple practice routine beats long sessions: aim for consistency, not intensity.

Styles & goals your teacher can support
