I have been a professional guitarist for the last 40+ years. I started teaching after local guitarists kept knocking on my door and asking for playing tips and ideas. I lived in France for 20 years, in Paris and Bordeaux, and during that time worked with 5 No 1 artists, including Jackie Quartz, Guesch Patti and Ray Charles. I have a wealth of learning, playing, performing, writing, arranging and producing experience to share. I have been teaching and writing online since April 2020 and find this just as effective as face-to-face and certainly more convenient for students. I'm pleased to say that due to this, I now have students from all over the UK and Europe. And (a bit of a name drop), one of my past songwriting partners recently won the Grammy for song of the year writing with Ed Sheeran!! With more than 30 years teaching electric and acoustic guitar and creative workshops privately and in schools. I enjoy working with all levels from beginners to advanced and work with all styles except Classical and Flamenco. As a self-taught guitarist, I know how to get the best out of every student using my bespoke system and method that I have fine-tuned over the years. My qualifications are more than 40 years in the industry working as a studio and stage guitarist and 30 years teaching at all levels! I teach what you want to learn, at your pace and it's got to be fun!

Gemma is an experienced and busy instrumental teacher and examiner based in Surrey. With the experience of over 19 years teaching in 30+ schools behind her, she is highly regarded within her sector and feels just at home teaching adult 1-2-1 lessons, as a class of primary school children. Hi! I'm Dan, a multi-instrumentalist and musical director living near Epsom, Surrey. I have played guitar for over 20 years and have a degree in Music Performance from the ACM in Guildford. I have spent the last 10+ years teaching, touring and performing all over the world on cruise ships, in theatre shows and with my own bands. Learning an instrument is fantastically rewarding life-long skill that can help foster creativity, build confidence, and relieve stress and anxiety. Every lesson I teach is tailored to the student; grades, learning songs, writing, music theory - nothing is off limits! My personal passion is 40s, 50s and 60s music from swing and jazz to rock and roll and on to soul and motown. Those few decades were an explosion of music and creativity, and a lot of the ideas and approaches discovered back then still continue to shape the music we listen to today! Lessons are available both in-person and online. Online lessons can be arranged on a flexible schedule to suit you most any day of the week. In-person lessons are subject to very limited availability and available on a first come first serve basis.

Guitar lessons: what to expect

Guitar lessons near you

The best guitar lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a teacher who helps you progress with clarity. Search by location to find in-person guitar lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist teachers for acoustic, electric, fingerstyle, rock, or grades.

Who guitar lessons are for

Guitar lessons work for complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced students. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, or adults returning to guitar — with a focus on the styles and songs you actually want to play.

What you’ll learn in guitar lessons

Most students work on chord fluency, rhythm, strumming feel, scales, finger placement, and repertoire. A good teacher will also structure your practice so you build confidence and technique without getting stuck.

Online vs in-person guitar lessons

Online guitar lessons can be highly effective, especially for busy schedules and specialist tuition. In-person lessons can feel more hands-on and are great if you prefer local support and face-to-face feedback.

A simple learning path for guitar

A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.

Weeks 1–4: Foundations
1

Learn posture, tuning, chord changes, strumming patterns, and how to practise without building bad habits.

Months 2–3: Songs & rhythm
2

Build a steady sense of timing, expand chord vocabulary (including barre chords), and play full songs with confidence.

Months 3–6: Technique & style
3

Develop picking, fingerstyle, lead basics, improvisation foundations, or exam preparation — depending on your goals.

Getting started: what you need

Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.

  • Acoustic vs electric: your teacher can recommend what fits your music taste and comfort.
  • A tuner + a few picks is enough to start — then add a capo or strap as you progress.
  • A simple practice routine beats long sessions: aim for consistency, not intensity.

Styles & goals your teacher can support

Choose a direction — lessons can be tailored around what you actually want to play.
