About Tom Marshall

I have been teaching guitar as my career since 2014. I teach electric, acoustic, classical and ukulele. I enjoy teaching clients of all ages. I have taught pupils as young as 5 and up to the age of 80. I tailor the lessons to the clients and, where relevant, the parents needs.

When I teach young children, I have a particular emphasis on keeping the activities in lessons light and enjoyable with realistically achievable goals. With the older children and adults I teach, some have busy an academic/extracurricular/work schedules and may only have the time to learn some of their favourite songs for enjoyment. On the other end, I have taught pupils who are looking to make a career in music.

I teach RSL Grades in Electric, Acoustic, Classical and Ukulele from Debut/Initial Grade to Grade 8, and have a 100% pass rate in all grade examinations. I prepare students for concerts and GSCE/A Level performances. I also assist pupils with GCSE/A Level compositions when requested. Furthermore, I have frequently been an assessor for the skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. As a result of all these things, I have developed good skills in planning, evaluating and monitoring students progress against criteria and expected outcomes.

I specialised in classical and popular music analysis when I studied at the University of Liverpool. I like to teach my pupils how to apply music theory into their improvisation, composition and aural skills.

Finally, I have done frequent performing in a church context covering a range of genres and styles. I also enjoy playing solo jazz in my own time, and introducing it to my advanced pupils.
