Hello – Adam here! I am a self-taught professional guitarist and guitar teacher with a strong belief in music being a fundamental method of self-expression and communication. I reflect this in my teaching style by allowing students the creative space to explore the instrument and its capabilities, and in doing so help them cultivate a love of the instrument and find their own voice. Music Qualifications & Achievements: I started teaching myself at age 15, and began performing professionally at age 18. I also hold: BSc in Sound Technology & Digital Music Grade 8 Guitar with Distinction

Oliver has been playing music for nearly 40 years, and performed his first live gig aged 11. Since those early days, he has gone on to become a prolific guitarist, performer, composer and teacher. Having started on violin aged 6, Oliver played with orchestras and sang with choirs throughout his school years. Alongside this, he discovered his passion for the guitar, which propelled his love for music forwards. Oliver achieved a 1st Class Degree (BMus) in Music Performance from the prestigious BIMM Institute, where he specialised in jazz and music education. Here, he studied guitar under John Wheatcroft and Femi Temowo, two world class players and educators. This led him to work as a professional musician on the live circuit, performing and recording regularly with professional jazz and blues bands Betty & The Bootleggers and The Reelers. In 2012, he founded original rock band Eureka Station, with whom he toured the UK, played festivals and recorded their debut EP at the famous State of the Ark Studios. His work as a session musician has found him performing with multiple function bands and artists, as well as his acoustic duo, Tall Tales . In 2015, he performed at London's O2 Arena with US country singer Sarah Darling. Based in his Wiltshire studio, Oliver also composes music for Film & Television, and holds a Masters (Distinction) in Music Composition for Film & TV from Bristol University. Oliver is a member of The Ivors, the Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT) and the Rockschool Teacher network. Oliver teaches all styles and levels of guitar and music theory, specialising in blues, rock and jazz. Qualifications: Degree (BMus) - Popular Music Performance Masters (MA) - Composition of Music for Film & Television
Hello there! Are you looking for a highly qualified, friendly, patient and dedicated teacher to help you with your guitar playing or musicianship? Whether you are finally ready to pick up the instrument you’ve always wanted to learn or are a seasoned player wanting an extra boost of inspiration, Jack is ready to meet all your needs. One to one lessons: Jack specialises in classical, acoustic and electric guitar, as well as music theory, with most genres covered. He tailors all his lessons to the individual needs of each student – whether you want to work your way up to Grade 8 on classical or electric guitar, strum your way through your favourite songs on acoustic, jam along with mates, or learn that Jimi Hendrix solo or Metallica riff. His lessons go above and beyond. He doesn’t like to spend quality time writing out homework or things to remember during the lesson – instead, he emails the pupil afterwards with a recap of what they’ve covered and suggestions of what to practice, meaning that you never forget anything from the lesson. He teaches his lessons in his dedicated music room in Camden, Bath. Band coaching: If you play regularly with other musicians Jack can also coach you in making a success of your group. He can help you set up your room and equipment to get the best possible sound, rehearse more effectively, write better songs, prepare for gigs and much more. Recording/mixing: Jack can show you the basics of recording within a home-studio setup, including mic placement, multitracking and editing/mixing on a DAW such as Logic or Garageband. Credentials: Over 14 years teaching experience (Jack has taught over 70 people between the ages of 4 to 70+) First Class (BMus Hons) degree in Music from Bangor University (specialising in classical guitar performance and songwriting) ATCL Recital Diploma in Classical Guitar Grade 8 with Distinction in Classical Guitar 100% pass rate with pupils entered for exams He is excellent with children, including those with learning difficulties, and holds an enhanced DBS certificate Jack has played in several established bands in Bristol, and has been gigging for over 14 years around the South West, Wales, Midlands and beyond. Testimonial from Fiona (mum) and Finley (aged 11): “Jack has been teaching our son to play the guitar for 1 year. He is a person of integrity who relates very well to all in our family, especially our son. He is punctual for all lessons, arriving at the house for lessons, and friendly and flexible in arranging lessons to meet the demanding schedule of our household. Jack prepares his lessons very well with a wide variety of activities which develop skills across the guitar’s musical range. He sends a written summary of what he has taught, with previously agreed activities, to practice for the next lesson. We highly recommend Jack as a guitar teacher.” Testimonial from Stephen: “I came to Jack Davies as a mature beginner wanting to learn the Classical Guitar. Jack listened to what I wanted and expected from the lessons and to my amazement, and within what appeared to be a relatively short period of time for learning a musical instrument (approximately 18/24 months) I had worked through two introductory books (Cracknell) and also had worked through several grade books (Trinity) and was able to work on, with confidence, and play grade 4/5 pieces. Jack is a very talented guitar teacher; with a vast wealth of knowledge and experience and enthusiasm; and is ‘bursting at the seams’ to share all of this. I found the lessons with Jack to be informative, instructional, stimulating and enjoyable, and I would leave each lesson feeling inspired.” Testimonial from Lilla (aged 11): “I had an amazing time learning to play the guitar. You taught me so much in just two and a half years! Thank you for encouraging me and being so patient. I will really miss you!” Thanks for looking!

In 2001, I started work as an examiner for the London College of Music Popular Music Theory Examinations and in 2002, I was invited to set the above Exam Papers for Grades 4-8. A practical 3-step plan
A focused route from first notes to confident playing, with music theory added only when it helps you play better—building confidence, creativity, and real-world performance skills.
Set up posture, tuning, and right-hand control, then learn essential open chords and two easy songs. Build a simple practice routine that fits real life.
Add barre chords, scales, and timing work. Introduce music theory: chord functions, keys, and reading rhythms, using riffs and progressions you actually play.
Refine tone, articulation, and improvisation. Learn to arrange parts for bass and guitar, and develop composition or songwriting skills toward a confident performance goal.
What you need before your first lesson
You’ll progress faster when your gear is comfortable and reliable—nothing fancy required.
- Bring your own guitar if possible (acoustic or electric); we’ll check action, tuning stability, and string choice for your hands.
- Have a tuner, a few picks, and a notebook or phone notes for assignments; we’ll track lessons, songs, and practice targets.
- If using electric, a small amp or headphone interface helps; for bass, we’ll discuss volume control and timing with drum kit-style grooves.
Styles we teach and outcomes we aim for
Your lessons stay tailored to your tastes, while building transferable technique and theory.
Learn chords, strumming, and simple fingerpicking with quick wins. We keep it fun while building core skills and clean changes.
Develop picking accuracy, bends, vibrato, and riff vocabulary. Apply theory to the fretboard so solos sound musical, not random.
Work on rhythm feel, chord embellishments, and fingerstyle patterns. Ideal for singers, songwriting, and confident playing at home.
Strengthen timing, note choice, and groove. We connect bass lines to harmony, and practice locking in as if playing with a drum kit.
Understand keys, chord progressions, and arranging. Use piano or keyboard as a visual tool, then write parts for guitar and bass.

FAQs about guitar lessons in Chippenham
Most tutors will tailor lessons to your goals & musical tastes, but week-to-week you can usually expect a mix of technique (chords, rhythm, picking), songs/repertoire like Jimi Hendrix, ear training, and structured practice targets. As you progress, working towards recording at a studio like time studio, lessons often add improvisation, music theory applied to the fretboard, and performance skills (timing, tone, playing with others).
It’s strongly recommended to have your own guitar so you can practise between lessons. Some tutors may have a spare instrument you can use in the first session, but it varies—confirm when you book. If you’re not sure what to buy, ask your teacher for guidance based on your size, style (acoustic/electric), and budget.
Yes—Chippenham has tutors who regularly teach complete beginners. Progress depends mainly on consistent practice: many learners can play a few simple songs within a few weeks, while building clean chord changes, rhythm, and confidence typically takes a few months. Your tutor should help you set realistic weekly goals so you can see steady improvement—if you need to contact a tutor to discuss lesson fit, click to enquire and request a call-back number.
Yes—guitar lessons in Chippenham are available for children, teens, and adults. Minimum ages vary by teacher (often around 5–7 for basic lessons), and some schools or services cater to specific year groups. Yes—many local tutors cover acoustic, electric, and bass. When you enquire, mention the styles you want (e.g., pop, rock, metal, fingerstyle, blues) so the tutor can match repertoire and technique to your instrument and goals.
Yes. Many teachers offer in-person lessons in/around Chippenham and also teach online (Zoom/Meet), which can be useful for busy schedules or if you want access to a specific specialist. If you choose online, a phone/tablet stand, decent lighting, and a simple way to hear both guitar and voice clearly can make a big difference.
Private guitar lessons in Chippenham commonly sit around the £20–£35 per hour range, depending on the tutor’s experience, lesson length (30/45/60 mins), and whether travel is included. Many tutors offer discounted blocks of lessons, and shorter sessions can be better value for younger beginners.
Chippenham has a smaller but active live music offering, supported by venues and nearby cultural spaces. In the town itself, The Neeld hosts live performances and events throughout the year, making it one of the main local venues to check. Just a short distance away, Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon is a major regional venue with a wide programme of concerts across genres. Chippenham is also home to the annual Chippenham Folk Festival, which brings live music across multiple venues and creates a strong local performance atmosphere. Because the scene is spread across nearby towns, regularly checking listings and attending events in the surrounding area is the best way to stay connected to live music opportunities.
Chippenham has limited dedicated music retail, but Bonners Music is a well-established local shop offering instruments, accessories, and general advice. It can be a useful starting point for essentials such as strings, cables, and basic equipment. For a wider selection of guitars, pedals, and amplifiers, many players travel to larger nearby cities such as Bristol or use established UK retailers once they know what they are looking for. For setups and repairs, independent guitar technicians are commonly used in the area. A teacher is usually the best source for a trusted recommendation, as a good setup can significantly improve playability and tuning stability.
