Significant teaching experience for over 20 years, having worked with pupils of all ages and abilities throughout Manchester in schools, privately and for various music services. I work for the RNCM and Chethams School of Music, have taught on the course 'Flute Kitchen', for Yorkshire Young Musicians (Leeds and Hull), at the RNCM Junior School, and am currently flute teacher at Bangor University. I teach pupils of all abilities from complete beginners to LRSM students. Lessons can be simply for fun and learning a new skill, or can be focussed on reaching a specific goal. Many of my pupils enter ABRSM exams, local and national competitions and play in local ensembles. I also organise a concert each year in which I encourage all of my pupils to play. I also have a number of flutes available for pupils to hire. Please contact me for further information!

I began playing piano at aged 7 before taking up woodwind instruments. I attended Cardiff University, graduating in 2012. I went on to complete my Post Graduate Certificate in Education before teaching Music. I taught Secondary Music up to A level for 10 years and was Head of Department, teaching piano, flute and saxophone privately. I left teaching in the summer and have moved to Manchester from Bristol and have continued to teach piano locally.

In-person lessons help with embouchure adjustments; online lessons are effective for repertoire, tone modelling and practice plans.

FAQs about flute lessons in Manchester

What qualifications should I look for in a Manchester flute tutor?

Many Manchester tutors hold music degrees, performance diplomas, and teaching qualifications (like ABRSM, Trinity, or DipABRSM). Look for teachers with professional performance experience and a teaching approach that resonates with you.

Can children and adults both take flute lessons from the same tutor?

Most tutors teach across all ages. Experienced teachers know how to engage children with fun, structured lessons while also working with adult learners at whatever level suits them.

I'm an adult beginner. Will a tutor work at my pace?

Absolutely. Many Manchester tutors specialise in adult learners and understand the challenges of starting music as an adult. A patient, supportive teacher will help you progress without pressure.

Do Manchester flute tutors teach jazz and contemporary music?

Yes — many tutors are comfortable teaching jazz improvisation, blues, pop arrangements, and contemporary styles alongside classical technique. Ask about their specialties when choosing a teacher.

Are online flute lessons as effective as in-person lessons?

Modern online teaching has become very effective, especially with good video quality and dedicated time. Many students appreciate the convenience and flexibility of virtual tuition.

How can I prepare for ABRSM or Trinity flute exams?

Many Manchester tutors have extensive exam preparation experience. They'll guide you through sight-reading, technique, performance skills, and the specific requirements of each exam board.

What happens in a typical flute lesson?

A lesson might include warm-ups and technique exercises, working on repertoire, music theory related to what you're playing, listening and performance work, and setting practice goals. Your teacher tailors it to your level and focus.

When should children start flute?

Many beginners start around 7–9 when breath support and finger size are suitable, though adapted junior flutes exist.

Can I learn flute online?

Yes — tone and technique can be developed online with careful guidance; occasional in-person checks help with embouchure.
