Hello, my name is Catherine and I am a professional Opera Singer and singing teacher based in London and Florida. My musical journey began at the age of 7 when I joined the Oxford Youth Choirs. I started learning with soprano Rebecca Mosely-Morgan and after a few years I took up a scholarship to study singing at the Royal Academy of Music in London. After continuing my studies with a Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal College of Music, I was taken on by English National Opera as a Harewood Artist, performing lead roles on the stage of the London Coliseum from 2011-2018. I have been lucky enough to have sung under the batons of Sir Edward Gardner, Sir Mark Elder, Mark Wigglesworth, Michael Hoffstetter, Gianluca Marciano among others. I have performed in the Royal Opera House, Royal Albert Hall and venues across the UK and Europe. Garnering rave reviews such as ‘Vocally plumtious’, by Hugh Canning in The Sunday Times and ‘chameleonic’ by The Spectator. “Catherine Young almost stole the show as a regulation traumatised, serially drunk and abused Pauline – bringing some point and many diversions to a cipherish character”- Opera Now Alongside my career as a performer, I have enjoyed teaching and passing on the joy of singing to many. I think music is healing and collaborative, and I wish to spread the knowledge I have gained from devoting my life to it. I like to teach healthy vocal production techniques, based on the bel canto school. Following my cello studies at the Prague Conservatoire, I completed his Master's degree at the Janacek Academy of Music (JAMU) in the Czech republic. I furthered my cello skills at the Toho Gakuen Academy in Japan and later under the guidance of legendary cellist Prof. Anna Shuttleworth (student of Pablo Casals) in the United Kingdom (Eton Cello Master Classes and the University of Leeds). I've won the 2nd prizes at the Anglo-Czech Competition in London (1999), the International String Competition London (2000) and the International String Competition Jihlava (2003). I've been awarded many scholarships and fellowships, including the Czech Music Foundation (CHF), the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Music Foundation OSA, the Socrates-Erasmus, and the Gideon Klein Foundation for the propagation of works written by Jewish Holocaust Composers. I chose to dedicate his life to the interpretation of cello compositions written by composers of the 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, giving special consideration to compositions for solo cello. My favourites are cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, Max Reger and Benjamin Britten. I'm particularly involved in researching, studying and performing works by Czech (Antonin Dvorak, Leos Janacek, Bohuslav Martinu, Josef Suk and Irena Kosikova), Jewish & Terezin (Gideon Klein, Erwin Schulhoff, Zikmund Schul, Jaromir Weinberger, James Simon and David Popper) and contemporary composers (Conrad Beck, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Benjamin Britten, Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Fortner, Alberto Ginastera, Cristobal Halffter, Hans Werner Henze, Heinz Holliger, Klaus Huber and Witold Lutoslawski), playing on a "George Kriwalski" cello made in 1904. As a soloist I've performed at many festivals in Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom. I've been teaching cello for many years. I'm experienced at taking students at all levels, able to give master classes as well as support beginners. I'm giving cello master classes at the United Kingdom, France, Italy and remotely online via Zoom/Skype. Accepting new cello students now. All ages and abilities are welcome!
I’m Ben, a classically trained professional saxophonist specialising in jazz, pop and improvisation style sax. I offer lessons exploring and developing your own sound world, creating confidence with your instrument and how to perform in an effective way to an audience. With a first class degree from University of Leeds I can teach an in depth understanding of music theory, notation reading and composition. Many of my students are playing for fun and looking to develop their skills to really enjoy playing the saxophone for themselves. For other students I can take them through a curriculum if they are looking to pass a certain exam, grades or if they are preparing for a concert. As a working saxophonist I have played at the Qatar World Cup, Epsom Races, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and many more high profile events. I have developed a unique improvisational style and I’d love to pass on how I have developed my performance to this level with new students and give a memorable performance to an audience. Compositionally, I also have a string of successful Spotify releases and I can help with students to compose and record themselves in a professional manner. Whether this is jazz, dance music or hip hop I have a huge amount of experience in record production. I have found recording and learning how to record myself as a great way to improve my playing and it is something I really encourage my students to try out. I really look forward to hearing from you and I'm happy to have a free consultation to see if you think I am right for you!
