If you decide to learn guitar with Aidan, not only will you get a great teacher and a tailored learning path, but you also gain access to a library of video resources that you can use in between lessons. As an added bonus, Aidan offers 2-for-1 discounts for parent/child lessons. Following your FREE first lesson, Aidan will create a custom learning path that covers the first 10 topics of your journey. These topics may take more than one lesson each to get through, but if you practice you will be surprised at how fast you improve! Learning the guitar is all about learning songs, they are the driving factor behind any real progress. The first thing Aidan will do is talk about your goals and what you hope to achieve by learning guitar. It could be as simple as learning your favourite song to play at a wedding or just for fun, all the way through to attaining your guitar grades, to being the biggest rock star in the world. The most important thing is that you enjoy the experience we provide, so playing guitar doesn’t feel intimidating. After 25 years of playing guitar and teaching in other sectors, Aidan decided to open my own guitar teaching school in Southampton. I’m your cliche tech-to-musician story. Having spent years working in entertainment logistics, audio visual services, and IT, Aidan ditched it all for music and built a professional studio here in Southampton.

Welcome to Benana Music Studios - a friendly, student-centred music school offering high-quality music lessons in Southampton for children, teenagers and adults of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the very first time, returning to music after a break, preparing for graded exams, building confidence as a performer or simply looking to enjoy making music, our experienced team of music teachers will create lessons around you and your goals. We offer singing lessons, piano lessons, guitar lessons, bass guitar lessons, violin lessons, drum lessons, flute lessons and more across our Southampton studios. Our students range from complete beginners taking their first steps in music to experienced musicians developing their technique, performance skills and musicianship. At Benana Music Studios, we believe there is no single “right” way to learn music. Every student is different, so our lessons are tailored to the individual. Some students want to work towards recognised music qualifications, while others want to learn their favourite songs, join a band, write their own music, improve their confidence or simply enjoy a creative hobby. Our teachers take the time to understand what each student wants to achieve and build engaging, enjoyable lessons around them. For students who would like to work towards recognised qualifications, we offer tuition and preparation for Rockschool graded music exams. Depending on the instrument and the student’s goals, our teachers can help students develop the practical skills, technique, musical understanding and confidence needed to work towards their chosen grade. We aim to make exam preparation a positive and rewarding part of learning rather than allowing it to take away from the enjoyment of making music. Performance is also a big part of the Benana experience. Throughout the year, our students have opportunities to perform live at showcases and community events in supportive, real-world settings. These opportunities are completely optional, but for students who want to take part, they can be a fantastic way to build confidence, gain stage experience and celebrate their progress alongside other musicians. Our wider music community also gives students opportunities beyond traditional one-to-one lessons. Depending on availability, students may have the chance to take part in group music sessions, songwriting programmes and other creative projects designed to help them collaborate, develop new skills and experience different aspects of making music. Benana Music Studios began with a simple aim: to make music lessons enjoyable, personal and centred around the student. Since then, we have grown into a thriving Southampton music school with a team of passionate teachers supporting hundreds of students each year. Our teachers bring a wide range of professional, educational and performance experience, but just as importantly, they are chosen for their ability to connect with students and make lessons welcoming, encouraging and enjoyable. We understand that starting music lessons can sometimes feel intimidating, particularly for complete beginners, so we work hard to create a relaxed and supportive environment where students feel comfortable learning at their own pace. We teach both children and adults, and you are never too young or too old to start learning music. Whether you are looking for a music teacher for your child, searching for singing lessons in Southampton, wanting to learn guitar, bass, drums, violin or piano, or hoping to prepare for a Rockschool music exam, we would love to help you find the right teacher. Our Southampton music lessons are available across our studio locations, with different teachers, instruments and times available throughout the week. If you’re not sure which teacher or lesson would be the best fit, our friendly team will be happy to help. We offer a free 20-minute taster session, giving you the opportunity to meet a teacher, experience a lesson and see whether Benana Music Studios feels right for you before getting started. Come and discover a friendly, supportive and exciting way to learn music with Benana Music Studios. Whether your goal is to play your first song, achieve your next Rockschool grade, perform live on stage or simply enjoy making music, we’ll be here to support you every step of the way.

Guitar lessons: what to expect
Guitar lessons near you
The best guitar lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a teacher who helps you progress with clarity. Search by location to find in-person guitar lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist teachers for acoustic, electric, fingerstyle, rock, or grades.
Who guitar lessons are for
Guitar lessons work for complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced students. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, or adults returning to guitar — with a focus on the styles and songs you actually want to play.
What you’ll learn in guitar lessons
Most students work on chord fluency, rhythm, strumming feel, scales, finger placement, and repertoire. A good teacher will also structure your practice so you build confidence and technique without getting stuck.
Online vs in-person guitar lessons
Online guitar lessons can be highly effective, especially for busy schedules and specialist tuition. In-person lessons can feel more hands-on and are great if you prefer local support and face-to-face feedback.
A simple learning path for guitar
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Learn posture, tuning, chord changes, strumming patterns, and how to practise without building bad habits.
Build a steady sense of timing, expand chord vocabulary (including barre chords), and play full songs with confidence.
Develop picking, fingerstyle, lead basics, improvisation foundations, or exam preparation — depending on your goals.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- Acoustic vs electric: your teacher can recommend what fits your music taste and comfort.
- A tuner + a few picks is enough to start — then add a capo or strap as you progress.
- A simple practice routine beats long sessions: aim for consistency, not intensity.
Styles & goals your teacher can support
Choose a direction — lessons can be tailored around what you actually want to play.
Chord progressions, strumming feel, accompaniment patterns, and building a set of songs.
Riffs, power chords, pentatonic shapes, bends, vibrato, and solo phrasing.
Right-hand patterns, independence, tone control, and arranging songs for solo guitar.
Technique, repertoire, sight-reading or musicianship skills, and a clear practice plan.
