Q: Do you take complete beginners? A: Yes. I’m happy taking beginners. Sometimes I even prefer beginners as I can teach the right techniques straight away, without the need to break bad old habits. Usually self-taught students or students of inadequate teachers acquire flawed right and left hand techniques unfortunately. Q: What is your method of teaching guitar? A: I build a custom made programme that would fit the student’s goals and needs. If you think you don’t have any goals and just want to play a bit and have fun, that’s also an honourable goal and I’ll just aim towards that. Just let me know what kind of music you’re into. I usually incorporate a bit of music theory in my lessons as well as encouraging my students to create music of their own. Q: What kind of styles and genres do you teach? A: Over the years I’ve dubbed with almost any possible music genre and style and therefore I can teach almost everything. From classical guitar grade exam preparations, through acoustic singer-songwriters songs to electric guitar shredding. Q: What should I bring to the lessons? A: 1) Your guitar. 2) Yourself. 3) A music notebook or a folder for A4 papers. 4) smartphone/camera if you wish to take a short video at the end of the lesson – it really does help when practising at home. Q: What is expected of me as a student? A: Three important things: practice, practice and more practice. If you don’t have a minimum of 20 minutes a day to practice – learning guitar is probably not for you. Learning a new instrument or progressing to more advanced levels requires time to practice. There’s no other alternative or a hidden secret to learn guitar quickly yet (there might a quicker way when we’ll become cyborgs…). I am a Guitarist, Composer, Teacher and Ethnomusicologist based in North London. My focus as a teacher is playing the music of the West African Mande on the guitar. We work through the traditional pieces of the kora, balafon and ngoni on the guitar, playing through cycles and grooves of the repertoire from great masters like Lassana Diabate, Ballake Sissoko and Jali Keba Susso. We explore the relationship of variation and improvisation in our performance, and how using muscle memory can aid us in performance. Lessons are delivered aurally with a focus on performance, freedom and expression. Theory is incorporated practically into the grooves we learn, while also providing frameworks for how to approach other musics. Music Qualifications & Achievements: I hold a BMus from Cardiff University and an MA from SOAS University of London. I have studied up to Grade 8 in the Trinity College London syllabus, and have studied with practitioners of Mande music and Mande guitar including Kadialy Kouyate, Lucy Duran, Derek Gripper and Lassana Diabate. I’ve been performing across the country for the best part of five years, and have recorded an impressive collection of music. This includes my debut album ‘The Wallace Line’, a collection of original songs and arrangements, inspired by my work with African, Indonesian, Classical and Folk music. I am especially proud of this album, recorded at my home during the COVID lockdowns and being a true expression of my own language as a musician. As I’ve been stepping into a more creative and fulfilling period as a performer, I’ve been inspired to begin teaching and help others develop their skills – I want every musician to be the most creative versions of themselves they can be.

Music has been a significant part of my life for as long as I can remember, starting in Cagliari, Italy, where I was born and raised. During my formative years, I studied classical guitar and received private lessons in jazz guitar, which fueled my passion for modern styles. The music of Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Led Zeppelin, and Pat Metheny opened a window to the fascinating worlds of rock, jazz, and blues. Today, as a freelance session guitarist and guitar tutor, I have extensive experience in live performance, studio recording, session playing, and songwriting. I enjoy the versatility and creativity that comes with working across a wide range of genres. As a guitar teacher, I cater to beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students. My lessons blend practice and theory, ensuring that students not only learn how to play chords or songs but also understand how chords and scales work together. I have experience teaching both children and adults, and I hold an enhanced DBS check. I can also assist students who are preparing for grade examinations. I strive to make my lessons fun and interactive, always providing customised study materials tailored to each student’s needs. Whether a student has just picked up the guitar, is at a more advanced level, or needs inspiration to develop their skills, I love teaching and find my greatest reward in seeing students achieve their goals. I offer discounts for bookings of five or more classes. There is an additional fee of £5 to £10 for lessons conducted at your home, depending on the distance I need to travel. I also teach the ukulele to beginners and intermediate players, and I provide transcriptions for acoustic and electric guitar, complete with tabs, standard music notation, and lyrics synchronised with the score. I am an elecric and double bass player, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter living in North East London, with nearly 15 years of professional experience as performer, composer/songwriter, bandleader, session musician and teacher. I am relaxed, patient and am keen to share my knowledge and skills with those who are in turn keen to learn! Teaching 1 to 1 lessons on Bass Guitar and Double Bass since 2012 (and taking lessons since long, long before!) I have earned great insight into different learning styles and take great joy in seeing students excel. It is my genuine goal to see students flourish and excel in their chosen music styles! I share my knowledge and experience to create an enjoyable and deep journey into the world of music that serves the interests of each individual student. As an accomplished guitarist, I have been fortunate enough to work and perform with top international musicians in a variety of musical genres including jazz, classical, popular and world music, enabling me to experience the artistic and social benefits of different ways of music-making. This work has seen me perform at a wide variety of top venues such as London’s Ronnie Scotts, The 606 club and Manchester Academy and many more. I have a firm grounding in both classical and contemporary styles with a particular focus on jazz and improvisation as my specialism. This is something I try to bring to my lessons, encouraging students to find their own voice on the instrument whilst developing core musical skills through a repertoire that they find engaging. I began teaching privately whilst studying music at the university in Manchester, where I was recommended as a teacher for a range of students, including relatives of faculty members from the University music department. Following that, I spent several years employed by Havering Music Services whilst completing my Jazz Guitar Masters at GSMD. HMS was an excellent vehicle for me to further develop my skills and experience in the guitar teaching profession, working with students of much younger ages and in more varied group situations. My name is Lucas and I’m a guitarist and guitar tutor based in North West London. I have been a music teacher for the last 4 years since I graduated. Since then I have taught privately and for organisations such as the Band Project and Your Guitar Academy. I’m a graduate of The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, where I did the BMus course. I have been playing for many years, and have completed tours in Japan, America, Europe and South America. I’m also an endorsee for JAM Pedals, ACS Custom, Protection Racket and Gamechanger Audio, and as a session player, I perform with people like Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music. Teaching statement: If you are a beginner then I like to get you playing and having fun as soon as possible. At the same time you will start learning the right techniques to progress and improve. The main aim in my teaching is to find out what works for you, what you want to learn and what your goals are. Once you have progressed from beginner level we can work harder on theory and technique. If you want to work towards ABRSM, Trinity or any other type of qualification we will work together to help you succeed. Experience: I have been playing and performing guitar for over 20 years and teaching since 2001. I specialised in composition at University and studied guitar with Tom Kerstens (classical) and Eric Roche (acoustic). I currently compose for classical/acoustic guitar and electro-acoustic media. I have also composed for short films and dance. As a teacher I have taught private one-to-one lessons and in schools around Bath and London. Currently I am teaching one to one and at 3 schools in the borough of Newham, years 5 - 7. As part of the Bath International Guitar Foundation (IGF) Outreach programme I taught in secondary schools and for disabled students. In the lessons I covered beginner's guitar and songwriting skills. As part of my teaching practice I also teach guitar grades from ABRSM and Trinity college classical guitar syllabus, Rockschool's electric guitar and RGT's (Registry of Guitar Tutor's) acoustic guitar.
