Hi, my name is Gwen and I am a professional singer, songwriter and vocal coach based in Milton Keynes. Having graduated with a first-class degree in Music (with Italian) from the University of Birmingham, I have since gone on to perform widely in a variety of spheres, from choral and operatic to rock and jazz. Under the artist name Gwen and the Good Thing, I have performed my own music on the BBC Introducing stages at Glastonbury, Wilkestock, Big Feastival and Standon Calling Festival, sung live on BBC Three Counties Radio, and played at iconic London venues such as the O2 Academy Islington, the Borderline Soho and Camden Assembly. In addition, I have a wide repertoire of cover material and perform regularly as a function musician. Alongside my vocal studies, as part of my degree, I studied paper and studio composition under Vic Hoyland and Jonty Harrison, and now predominantly write pop music for myself and other artists. My recent releases have garnered 80,000+ streams on Spotify. I currently tutor vocal students of all ages across a wide range of genres, focusing on technique as well as performance in a friendly and relaxed environment. I can also assist you with your own songwriting and music theory studies, if you wish, and always like to include a little bit of wider musical context and information in my singing lessons. After teaching throughout lockdown, I am extremely experienced at teaching via Zoom, with the full technical set-up to provide lessons online. Music Qualifications & Achievements: Bachelor of Music with Italian (First Class Honours) – The University of Birmingham, 2011 ABRSM Grade 8 Practical – VoiceABRSM Grade 8 Practical – FluteABRSM Grade 5 Practical – PianoABRSM Grade 5 Theory I have undergone extensive Safeguarding training, as well as SEN training, having worked for several years with students on the Autism spectrum. Hi, I’m a very experienced, highly qualified, music teacher, providing 1-1 singing, piano, keyboard and music theory lessons, teaching from my home studio in Willen Park, Milton Keynes. My aim is to have fun whilst creating a solid foundation from which you can learn and progress to be able to play or sing to a high standard. Distinctions are always aimed for in exams and in nearly all cases my pupils have achieved distinctions or merits. Whilst always striving to achieve high marks, the emphasis is also about developing a real love of music that can last a lifetime! I am an enthusiastic, fun, kind and patient teacher who always aims to ensure my pupils leave their lessons feeling proud of themselves and happy with their progress. I ensure that they are always clear about what they need to practise at home in order to improve and succeed. I also use different exam boards as I see fit, tailoring each lesson for each pupil to maximise their potential and match their preferences regards style and genre as well as technical aims and exam settings. Singing lessons: what to expect
The best singing lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a coach who helps you build your voice safely and consistently. Search by location to find in-person singing lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist vocal coaches for pop, musical theatre, rock, classical, and exam preparation.
Singing lessons are for complete beginners through to experienced performers. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, and adults — whether you’re learning for fun, building confidence, joining a band or choir, or returning to singing after a break.
Most students work on breath control, pitch, tone, range, vocal agility, and song interpretation. A good vocal coach will also help you practise effectively, warm up safely, and build vocal stamina — so you improve without strain.
Online singing lessons can be highly effective for technique, consistency, and flexible scheduling — especially with an experienced coach. In-person lessons can feel more immersive and are great if you prefer face-to-face feedback and hands-on guidance.
A simple learning path for singing
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Learn healthy breathing, posture, warm-ups, and simple exercises to improve pitch accuracy and reduce strain while building confidence.
Develop stronger breath support, resonance and tone control, smoother transitions between registers, and start expanding your usable range.
Improve vocal agility, dynamics, phrasing and expression, build stamina for longer songs, and develop performance skills — tailored to your style and goals.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- No kit required: you can start with your voice, a phone recorder, and a quiet room.
- Hydration and warm-ups matter more than volume — good singing is built on consistency, not pushing.
- If learning online: headphones and a stable internet connection make lessons smoother.
