Do you love singing? Maybe you want to try it as a hobby? Come and take some online singing lessons with me. I’m vocal teacher Gemma Higgins, fully DBS checked. I have many years of working in the music industry! Gaining my First Diploma in Performing Arts at college, Music Education Teacher Cert at ABRSM, recording songs and performing in shows and pantomime, to singing on the live circuit in bands and in my acoustic duo Acoustical. I would love to hear from you. I can help you to improve your technique, tone, pitching and listening skills. Health benefits of singing are well documented: Singing improves your mood, releases endorphins and is a very effective stress reliever. Singing is so important because it builds self-confidence and promotes self-esteem.  I have always believed it is a fantastic way of bringing different ages and abilities to come together and create something special. Your voice is your instrument and needs constant care and attention, warm-ups prepare you for the intense vibrations that come along with singing.  It gives you a working structure to look after your precious instrument and makes your voice aware. Believe it or not, singing also makes you very productive! It requires you to isolate parts of your body but also to keep everything working together and creates a unique self-awareness of what the whole body is doing.  The more you practice getting used to your voice, the more confidence you will have in yourself. Having good vocal control, tone, clear phrasing and vocal support is so important and is the basis for singing.  I thoroughly believe in active listening while singing. Listening skills are so important and a valuable life skill, and is incredibly valuable training. As any vocal coach will tell you, breathing exercises are absolutely essential for good singing.   Breathing exercises give the singer a solid foundation from which to work.  Take care of the voice, I will provide you with all the support needed, with vocal health in mind your voice will serve you well for many years to come. The way to develop a good singing voice is to practice each of the points above, improving your voice and more. Performance skills and singing bring magic combined, mastering the craft of singing with stage presence brings energy and charisma, you are bringing something meaningful to the audience, and setting aside practice sessions will concentrate on integrating voice and movement.  All such important skills. Singing encourages you to express your emotions and sharpen your abilities to communicate whilst exercising lip and tongue movement.  And one of the biggest benefits of singing is the repeated use of the ‘memory muscle’. Having a good means of having a good voice throughout a song, not just every now and then.  Consistent volume, tone, pitching, support and style are most conducive to consistent singing.  Learning these vocal techniques will help you become a complete singer, your technique becomes greater than the sum of its parts when working on multiple facets of your voice. Simple vocal techniques include: Vibrato Breath control Humming Diction Phrasing Lip roll arpeggio Improvement is more rapid and steady when having the required knowledge and skills to develop your vocal instrument. Just as an athlete would never begin a training session without first stretching, it is never recommended that a singer jumps into intense vocal demands without first allowing the voice to warm up properly. Look after your voice, and your voice will look after you. Originally from Glasgow, I am a born performer and drama teacher with a real passion for creativity, inclusion, and helping young people shine on stage. I trained at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire graduating in 2015 with a degree in Applied Performance (Community & Education). In 2017, I received my Postgraduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs & Disabilities from the University of Birmingham, where my primary research and studies focused on making performing arts more accessible for all learners. I have worked to build a career that blends performing, teaching, and creating inclusive spaces for everyone to explore the arts. Over the years, I have worked with a range of community groups, colleges, and theatres throughout the West Midlands, including the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Midlands Arts Centre and The Artrix Centre (Bromsgrove). I have taught Drama and Singing to young people of all ages and abilities—in the UK and internationally having worked in the USA and spending two years in Shanghai with The Walt Disney Company. Working for Disney, I used Disney stories as a learning medium to teach English and Drama. Whilst there, he also wrote and directed interactive theatre shows that toured local schools, combining entertainment with education. Although working full time in the Civil Service, I still continue to teach and direct, always finding new ways to keep my lessons fun, imaginative, and tailored to all of my students. Whether it’s devising new theatre or helping individuals to find their voice on stage, energy, creativity, and care for every single performer is always at the forefront of my lessons. I am excited to finally offer tailored one-on-one sessions in acting, screen acting and singing as well as exam preparation work for established examination boards such as LAMDA and PAA/RSL. Singing lessons: what to expect

Singing lessons near you

The best singing lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a coach who helps you build your voice safely and consistently. Search by location to find in-person singing lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist vocal coaches for pop, musical theatre, rock, classical, and exam preparation.

Who singing lessons are for

Singing lessons are for complete beginners through to experienced performers. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, and adults — whether you’re learning for fun, building confidence, joining a band or choir, or returning to singing after a break.

What you’ll learn in singing lessons

Most students work on breath control, pitch, tone, range, vocal agility, and song interpretation. A good vocal coach will also help you practise effectively, warm up safely, and build vocal stamina — so you improve without strain.

Online vs in-person singing lessons

Online singing lessons can be highly effective for technique, consistency, and flexible scheduling — especially with an experienced coach. In-person lessons can feel more immersive and are great if you prefer face-to-face feedback and hands-on guidance.

A simple learning path for singing

A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.

Weeks 1–4: Breath, pitch & confidence
1

Learn healthy breathing, posture, warm-ups, and simple exercises to improve pitch accuracy and reduce strain while building confidence.

Months 2–3: Control, tone & range
2

Develop stronger breath support, resonance and tone control, smoother transitions between registers, and start expanding your usable range.

Months 3–6: Style, performance & stamina
3

Improve vocal agility, dynamics, phrasing and expression, build stamina for longer songs, and develop performance skills — tailored to your style and goals.

Getting started: what you need

Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.

  • No kit required: you can start with your voice, a phone recorder, and a quiet room.
  • Hydration and warm-ups matter more than volume — good singing is built on consistency, not pushing.
  • If learning online: headphones and a stable internet connection make lessons smoother.

Styles & goals your teacher can support

Choose a direction — lessons can be tailored around what you actually want to play.
