About Simon Peter
Hello, I’m Simon Peter, a professional music educator, pianist, conductor, and curriculum developer with over 14 years of teaching experience. My goal as a teacher is not simply to teach students how to play an instrument, but to help them become confident, independent and expressive musicians.
I began teaching music in 2012 and have since worked with students of different ages, abilities and musical goals. I currently teach Piano, Keyboard, Guitar, Violin, Drums and Singing, along with Music Theory, sight-reading, ear training and ensemble skills. I also have extensive experience preparing students for graded music examinations and performance opportunities.
I hold ABRSM Grade 8 Piano (Practical) and a Diploma in Audio Engineering from KM Music Conservatory, A. R. Rahman’s music institution in Chennai. My professional experience also includes curriculum development, music education programmes, choir training and music direction. I have worked on educational content and curriculum projects for organisations including WhiteHat Jr. and BYJU’S, giving me experience in designing structured music-learning programmes for a wide range of learners.
My Approach to Teaching
I believe that every student learns differently. Some students want to work towards examinations, while others simply want to play their favourite songs, accompany themselves while singing, develop their musical skills, or eventually perform on stage. I adapt lessons according to the student’s age, ability, interests and goals.
My lessons combine technical development with practical musicianship. Depending on the student and instrument, we may work on technique, repertoire, music theory, sight-reading, rhythm, ear training, improvisation, performance skills and musical interpretation.
I also place a strong emphasis on understanding music rather than simply memorising pieces. My aim is for students to eventually look at a piece of music and understand what they are playing, why they are playing it that way, and how they can communicate it to an audience.
Exams & Performance
For students preparing for ABRSM, Trinity, MTB, Rockschool/RSL and other graded examinations, I provide structured preparation covering repertoire, technique, sight-reading, theory and performance skills.
Performance is also an important part of my teaching. I regularly work with students on preparation for recitals, concerts, examinations, auditions and competitions, helping them develop musical confidence, stage presence and performance skills.
Beyond Individual Lessons
Alongside individual teaching, I have extensive experience directing choirs and ensembles. I serve as a music director and conductor, and have worked with both children and adult ensembles. This experience allows me to help students understand how their individual musical skills fit into a larger ensemble.
I also run a music education organisation and have experience teaching through music schools, school programmes, workshops and online lessons. I have been teaching online since 2019 and am comfortable working with students through digital learning environments.
Whether you are a complete beginner, returning to music after a break, preparing for an examination, or looking to develop your performance skills, I aim to make lessons structured, practical, encouraging and enjoyable.
If your goal is to learn music seriously while still enjoying the process, I would be happy to help you on that journey.
