I am a professional piano player and improviser working and gigging in Leeds and across the UK. All my knowledge that I have picked up from studying, gigging and rehearsing I wish to pass on to you. My musical journey started when I was a teenager, I joined a songwriting development group in Bromley (Kent) where I grew up. There, I was exposed to so much music from our mentors, I already had quite a specific taste at this point (I loved Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, Prince, D’Angelo etc) but my taste widened over the years of exposure to different musical concepts, styles and genre. This eventually lead me to study Jazz at Leeds Conservatoire, where I had Matthew Bourne as a teacher – which lead me to an even wider scope of music, especially improvised music and Free Jazz. I first saw an improvised trio called ‘The Thing’ in my first year, and it changed how I saw music. The energy they created on stage was electric. After seeing that, I decided to dedicate my life to not only improvised music but also having as much passion for music, whatever genre and style, that those three people on that stage had. Hello, my name is Marilena, and I’m a professional singer, vocal coach, and music educator based in the UK and Cyprus. I hold a First Class Honours degree in Popular Music from Leeds Conservatoire, where I spent four years developing my artistry, performance skills, and teaching methods. With years of experience on stage and in the studio, I’ve had the privilege of performing on television and at venues like the Royal Albert Hall. I’m currently working closely with students of all ages, helping them build confidence, improve technique, and express themselves through music. Whether you’re looking to strengthen your voice, learn piano, dive into music theory, or write your first song, I’m here to provide support and guide you through every step of the way with lessons tailored to your goals, pace, and style. In addition to teaching and performing, I’m also an active songwriter. I recently signed an original track with MediaTracks, a respected UK-based library music publisher. The track will soon be featured in their catalogue, making it available for sync licensing by major media companies such as Universal Music Group (UMG), Warner Music Group, Sony Music, and Columbia Records. I’m also currently awaiting a placement decision on another song submitted to their team. To me, music is more than a skill. I see music as a powerful way of connecting with our inner self as well as with the people around us. My approach combines structure with creativity, and technique with emotional expression, in a safe and encouraging environment. One of my favourite quotes is “Art is the expression of the profoundest thoughts in the simplest way” by Albert Einstein.”

I started my professional career working abroad as a dancer and discovered that I enjoyed characterising and acting as I danced. On my return to England, I attended SLP college with a view of training in all three disciplines: Dance, Drama and Singing. My main ambition was to sing and act in a musical so was thrilled when I received a call back for a new Glenn Miller show… only for funding to cease days later. Fred Astaire sang ‘Pick yourself up, Dust yourself down and Start all over again’ so I did just that. I left college and began to train privately in Speech and Drama, Acting, Singing and Theory of Music and started working as a jobbing actress, that included work for a Theatre Company, performing, co-writing and directing as well as work for TV, and started up drama workshops for children and adults. I was inspired to devise a programme for the elderly through my love of musicals and discovered the early jazz standards composed by Gershwin and Cole Porter. Thus began my interest in Jazz Singing and a return to education. I completed a BTec in Jazz Studies at Leeds College of Music and started learning the piano. I then went onto study for a BMus (Hons) at the University of Huddersfield and was fortunate to study both performance and composition. I have a Masters degree in Music for the Moving Image at Leeds Beckett University where I have been encouraged to push boundaries to create music that is new and exciting. I am now studying for a PhD. I also play keys in a band called Triple Lock and sing with Timeless Horizons. I teach 1-1 and small groups including Singing, Beginner Piano and Theory. Piano lessons: what to expect
Great piano lessons combine structured technical development with repertoire that inspires you. Search by location to find local teachers for in-person tuition, or choose online lessons to access specialist tutors in your chosen style.
Piano suits learners of all ages — children, teens, adults and returning players. Lessons can be tailored to beginners, hobbyists, exam candidates, and aspiring performers.
Lessons focus on technique, rhythm, reading, ear training, and musical expression. Teachers create progressive plans so you consistently improve week-to-week.
Online lessons are effective for repertoire, theory and technique when recorded materials and clear audio/video setup are used. In-person lessons offer direct physical guidance and instrument-specific coaching.
A simple learning path for piano
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Develop posture, hand position, basic sight-reading, simple scales and arpeggios, and a practice routine that builds consistent progress.
Expand technique with scales, arpeggios and exercises; learn pieces across styles and build expressive playing and musicality.
Refine interpretation, explore improvisation or accompaniment, and prepare confidently for exams, recitals, or studio sessions.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- A reliable upright or digital piano with weighted keys is ideal — full-size 88-key preferred.
- Piano bench at the correct height helps maintain relaxed posture and technique.
- A metronome and a simple practice plan (20–40 minutes daily) yield far better results than occasional long sessions.
