I have a specialty in teaching people from vulnerable groups. This includes, but is not limited to, people with: disabilities; learning difficulties; mental health concerns; ASD issues; PTSD; dyspraxia; deafness; blindness. Qualifications:
Across three decades of teaching, performing, and artistic leadership, I have sought to inspire students, expand the boundaries of guitar pedagogy, and contribute meaningfully to higher education. My work as a performer, educator, artistic director, and innovator has equipped me with the skills and vision to support and develop a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking guitar department. At the heart of my teaching philosophy is the belief that every student has the capacity for artistic growth and self-expression, regardless of background or ability. My role is to inspire curiosity, foster resilience, and enable students to realise their potential as musicians and individuals. I aim to create an environment in which students feel empowered to ask questions, explore diverse repertoire, and develop core musical values, while their own artistic voice evolves. My approach is student-centred and holistic, attentive to different learning styles, inclusivity, and the academic rigour that underpins UK higher education. I set high but achievable standards, communicate expectations clearly, and provide feedback that is honest, supportive, and developmental. Teaching is always differentiated and responsive to each student’s background, learning needs, and career aspirations. I have a proven conservatoire-level teaching record, with over twenty-five years at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and sixteen years at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama Junior Department, preparing students for conservatoire auditions and for undergraduate and postgraduate recital performance. My experience teaching both pre-conservatoire and tertiary-level students has resulted in numerous successful admissions to UK and European conservatoires, high levels of degree attainment, and sustained professional careers in performance and education. I take particular pride in supporting students not only as performers, but as future leaders and advocates for the guitar. Alongside teaching, I maintain an active international performing and recording career. My work includes chamber music with the Eden–Stell Guitar Duo and Vida Guitar Quartet, collaborations with tenor James Gilchrist and flautist Jessica Quiñones, and solo performances. I tour regularly in Europe, the United States, and China, participate in international guitar festivals, and am frequently invited to serve on juries for major international guitar competitions, including the GFA, Martínez, and Heinsberg competitions. Since 2004, I have been a faculty member at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, teaching individual lessons, leading repertoire and chamber music classes, and contributing to curriculum design and review. My teaching spans all stages of technical and artistic development and includes preparation for recitals, technical assessments, and public performance. With over 35 years’ experience, I have comprehensive knowledge of the solo, duo, song, and chamber repertoire and regularly curate scores for examination and study. In addition to conservatoire teaching, I have extensive experience in pre-conservatoire education. At the Guildhall School of Music & Drama Junior Department, including its early years String Training programme, I worked with curricula integrating solfège and Dalcroze eurhythmics to establish strong rhythmic, aural, and reading skills in young musicians. I was also invited to contribute repertoire recommendations to Trinity College London’s diploma syllabus, which remain in use today. I am deeply committed to curriculum innovation and regularly collaborate with departmental leadership on syllabus development, repertoire expansion, and ensemble opportunities. My work aligns closely with QAA benchmarks and sector best practice and includes auditioning, examining, report writing, and quality assurance processes. I also serve regularly as an external examiner and adjudicator at leading UK institutions, contributing to academic integrity and national standards. A distinctive aspect of my career has been leading collaborative and themed projects. These include composer-in-residence initiatives, commissioning new works and guiding students through rehearsal and premiere processes, and themed performance projects such as Guitar and Dance and Modern British Guitar, culminating in public performances and recordings. Through festivals and outreach initiatives—including Arts Circus, the Play2 Youth Festival in Armenia, Winchester Guitar Festival, and Ammerdown Guitar Summer School—I have helped create inclusive, well-governed opportunities for young musicians to perform and collaborate. My performance and recording activities are integral to my teaching. I actively use recording projects as pedagogical tools, sharing insights into interpretation, problem-solving, and collaboration, and encouraging students to engage in their own recording work. My extensive repertoire knowledge, ongoing research, and commitment to lifelong learning underpin all aspects of my teaching. This includes specialist interests such as the music of Federico Mompou and a continued openness to developing new skills and technologies. Together, these experiences reflect my commitment to excellence in teaching, artistic leadership, and the continued development of guitar education within higher education.

No dejes pasar otro año diciendo "algún día aprenderé". Reserva tu primera clase hoy, hablemos de tus metas y empecemos a construir tu legado musical. ¡Te espero en clase!
Hi, I’m Ben, and I’m passionate about all things guitar and music. The guitar has been a central part of my life for over twenty years, and for more than a decade I’ve had the privilege of helping others begin and deepen their own musical journeys through teaching. Whether it’s someone picking up a guitar for the very first time or an experienced player looking to refine their technique and musical understanding, I genuinely love being part of that process. I recently moved to the UK from Australia, where I worked as a school guitar tutor as well as a freelance performer. During my time in Australia, I taught in a range of settings, including schools, one-to-one private lessons, and small group environments. This has given me experience working with students of all ages and abilities, from young beginners to adults returning to the instrument after many years away. Alongside teaching, I’ve always remained an active musician, performing regularly and continuing to develop my own skills as a guitarist. My formal musical training comes from the Queensland Conservatorium, one of Australia’s leading music institutions, where I completed two degrees: a Bachelor of Popular Music and a Bachelor of Music, specialising in Jazz Guitar. These degrees gave me a strong foundation in technique, theory, harmony, rhythm, improvisation, and ensemble playing, as well as exposure to a wide range of musical styles. While my background includes jazz and contemporary music, my teaching is not limited to any single genre. I’m comfortable working with rock, pop, blues, funk, jazz, indie, and more, depending on the student’s interests. Over the past ten years, I’ve taught more than 150 students, and one thing I’ve learned very clearly is that enjoyment is essential for long-term progress. While discipline and practice are important, learning music shouldn’t feel like a chore. My main goal as a teacher is to foster a genuine joy for music and for the craft of playing guitar. When students enjoy what they’re learning, they’re more motivated to practise, more curious, and ultimately make better progress. I strongly believe that no two students are the same, so I tailor lessons to suit each individual’s goals, musical taste, and learning style. Some students want to learn songs and play for enjoyment, others want to understand theory more deeply, improve their improvisation, or prepare for exams or performances. I’m happy to adapt lessons to suit all of these goals. Song suggestions from students are always welcome, as learning music you love is one of the best ways to stay engaged. I also offer my own repertoire suggestions to help expand musical horizons and introduce new techniques and concepts. Above all, I aim to create a relaxed, supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and expressing themselves musically. My hope is that every student not only improves their guitar playing, but also develops a lasting connection to music that stays with them well beyond the lesson room.

Guitar lessons: what to expect
The best guitar lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a teacher who helps you progress with clarity. Search by location to find in-person guitar lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist teachers for acoustic, electric, fingerstyle, rock, or grades.
Guitar lessons work for complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced students. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, or adults returning to guitar — with a focus on the styles and songs you actually want to play.
Most students work on chord fluency, rhythm, strumming feel, scales, finger placement, and repertoire. A good teacher will also structure your practice so you build confidence and technique without getting stuck.
Online guitar lessons can be highly effective, especially for busy schedules and specialist tuition. In-person lessons can feel more hands-on and are great if you prefer local support and face-to-face feedback.
A simple learning path for guitar
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Learn posture, tuning, chord changes, strumming patterns, and how to practise without building bad habits.
Build a steady sense of timing, expand chord vocabulary (including barre chords), and play full songs with confidence.
Develop picking, fingerstyle, lead basics, improvisation foundations, or exam preparation — depending on your goals.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- Acoustic vs electric: your teacher can recommend what fits your music taste and comfort.
- A tuner + a few picks is enough to start — then add a capo or strap as you progress.
- A simple practice routine beats long sessions: aim for consistency, not intensity.
Styles & goals your teacher can support
