I let the student guide the lesson and study what excites them.Music is most powerful when it excites you. Too many students lose motivation because they’re forced to study material they don’t connect with.My approach is different: I encourage students to guide the direction of their lessons, focusing on the songs, styles, and skills that inspire them.While I ensure strong foundations in technique, I balance this with making real music from day one. This keeps lessons engaging, enjoyable, and personally meaningful — so you stay motivated and see faster progress. 3. Find your voice.This phrase can seem cliche and often lacks substance when used.I was proficient at copying others in my early years of learning the instrument. However, I struggled to be creative, take initiative, and think for myself.This is similar to someone who can regurgitate/imitate a phrase in a conversation (like a parrot) but cannot express their own opinion and think for themselves.My goal as a teacher is to help the students imitate other musicians, assimilate their ideas, and innovate to find their unique voices.

Gene has gained a wealth of music knowledge after touring Europe and the UK playing in several high-profile bands over the last 25 years. He strives to pass on this knowledge to other musicians and his students, and he is keen to develop their passion for music. Gene has achieved a successful teaching business which was started in Jan 2012, and has taught hundreds of students over the last decade both privately and within schools, with 100% pass rate for exams through Rock School, ABRSM and Trinity Rock and Pop syllabuses. Gene delivers personalised lessons to suit the needs of each individual learner. He really understands how to make music accessible to all. Gene has expanded his knowledge by studying a degree in music at Nexus ICA in Coventry. After working as a music provider for a year at the Cube Disability, Northampton, he is widening his teaching scope and pursuing a master’s degree in music therapy to provide therapy to all ages. Helping to improve the quality of life for children and adults with learning difficulties. He is passionate about helping others to feel a sense of achievement and well-being and through his passion in music he is achieving this. Gene has an innate understanding of the power of music in improving mental wellbeing and supporting neurodiversity. Gene has recorded, managed, and performed nationally and internationally with many bands since the age of 14. He has been Musical Director for a George Michael tribute show and Soul of the Town Motown and Soul show band. He currently still performs keys regularly with a popular covers band, as well as playing saxophone and piano for wedding guests and corporate clients. Hi! I’m James (most people call me Jay), a passionate drum tutor based in Stratford-upon-Avon, helping drummers of all ages discover the excitement, creativity and sheer joy of playing the drums. My musical journey started in Chester, where I picked up my first pair of sticks at the age of 12 as part of a marching Scout Band. Marching was the perfect foundation — it drilled in timing, discipline and all the rudimental building blocks that shaped me into the drummer I am today. By 15, I was behind a full drum kit and completely hooked. After moving to Stratford, I jumped straight into the local music scene, playing in various bands, winning a Battle of the Bands competition, and even landing a slot on the local radio station The Bear FM back in the day — an experience I’ll never forget! I now teach drums both independently and through Top Of The Rock Music Tuition, working in schools as well as running my own drum school. I love making lessons fun, confidence-building and inspiring, whether you’re playing your very first beat or jamming along to your favourite tracks.
