Learn drums with Tom Warner in Sheffield
As a tutor, I strive to develop a students passion and creativity in whatever their goals may be. My approach to teaching is to teach the student the fundamental language of rhythm, drumming and music, and how to apply this creatively in any way they see fit. This means you’ll not only learn what you want to learn, but you’ll find you understand what you hear in music, and be able to figure things out for yourself.
I have achieved a BA Hons in Music Performance and an MA in Creative Practice, which focused on the neurology, biology and physiology of drumming, and its effects on the body, brain and mind. This has influenced my teaching style to a degree that allows me to really delve deep into technique, posture, learning methods and easy practice hacks to make your life as a musician much easier.
I have a wealth of knowledge from travelling and working within the music industry, having recorded in some legendary locations such as Sun Studios in Memphis, teaching at the Stax Music Academy, and touring across Europe as both a technician and performer. I have performed in a wide variety of settings from live performances, recordings, videos and musical theatre. If grading is your goal, I teach the Trinity grade syllabus to grade 8, and I am a registered digital exam centre, so everything can be done in house from learning to recording and submitting.

Student reviews
“I have been learning drums for just over two years now and Tom is the best teacher that anyone who is learning drums could want . He gets a lot of things done in a lesson and can still has a laugh when doing so . Tom has a very broad range of knowledge and skills when it comes to drumming which inspires me to be just like him . It’s really fun to learn from him .”
“I am completely new to drumming and Tom has been a great teacher. He has such a wealth of knowledge on technique, the psychology behind drumming and then actual creativity. I leave every lesson feeling as if time has flown by. He even took the time to recommend drum sets that I could buy once I was ready to get my own set. It took me over 6 months to decide that and in the meantime, Tom’s studio had everything necessary to learn how to play.”
“Tom has been an excellent teacher, I am not the quickest learner and he has been very patient and supportive which has made me feel a lot more confident and comfortable playing.”

Choosing the right Sheffield drum teacher
Learning drums with a Sheffield teacher
The right drum teacher should give you more than exercises. Good lessons help you understand rhythm, develop clean technique, build confidence behind the kit, and connect practice with the music you actually want to play. Sheffield students can look for tuition that fits their level, schedule, preferred styles, and longer-term goals.
What your first lessons can focus on
Good drum teaching usually begins with timing, stick control, posture, coordination, and simple grooves that feel musical quickly. As lessons develop, students can work on fills, dynamics, genre vocabulary, reading, song parts, graded material, recording skills, or band confidence. The most useful Sheffield drum lessons connect technique with real music, so practice at home leads to better playing in rehearsal, school, studio, or live settings.
Why reviews matter when choosing a drum teacher
Drum lessons are personal. Reviews help show whether a teacher is patient, organised, encouraging, reliable, and able to adapt to different ages and levels. A strong review profile is not just a star rating; it is evidence that students have felt supported over time and made useful progress in real lessons.
Lesson format, prices, and practical details
Sheffield drum lessons may take place in a teacher’s studio, online, at a music school, or sometimes at the student’s home depending on the tutor. Before booking, ask about lesson length, price, kit access, cancellation terms, practice expectations, and whether the teacher can support your preferred styles. If you do not yet own a full kit, a good teacher can often suggest a realistic starter setup.
A practical route from first grooves to confident playing
The best drum lessons connect technique, songs, timing, and real listening habits instead of treating exercises as separate from music.
Set up your kit, grip sticks correctly, and lock basic rhythm patterns with a metronome. Build coordination and confidence through short, repeatable practice blocks.
Develop groove consistency, dynamic control, and cleaner fills across rock, funk, and jazz. Start applying technique to songs and practical band-style transitions.
Refine timing under pressure, expand repertoire, and prepare full song run-throughs. Focus on musicality, endurance, and dependable performance habits for rehearsal or live work.
What to ask before your first Sheffield drum lesson
A good first message gives the teacher enough context to recommend the right lesson format and practice setup.
- Tell the teacher your current level, whether you have access to a kit, and what kind of music you most want to play.
- Ask whether lessons are studio-based, online, at your home, or flexible depending on schedule and location.
- Bring sticks, ear protection, and a notebook if you already have them, but ask before buying a full kit too early.
