My Mission

Lessons Tailored To You

I am extremely passionate about music, having played the piano from the age of 5, drums from age 9, guitar from age 14 and bass guitar from age 19. I began gigging as a drummer around the age of 15, and was hooked straight away! I knew then all I wanted to do was play and teach drums professionally, which I’ve been doing now for the last 15 years.

Advice for New Students

Professional Drum Teacher in Bournemouth

Hello, and welcome to my drum teaching journey! As an experienced drummer who has played with several bands, my lessons are catered to aspiring drummers of all ages, abilities, and musical styles. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to fine-tune your drum skills, I tailor each drum lesson to fit your unique needs and goals.

My Approach

My teaching approach is both fun and educational, focusing on practical and theoretical aspects of drumming. We start by exploring your current level and understanding of percussion instruments, whether you've played before or are entirely new to the drum kit. From there, drum lessons can be scheduled in one-hour sessions, where we'll dive into playing techniques, rhythm exercises, and comprehensive music lesson plans that span various genres.

Learn All Styles on the Drums

As your dedicated drum teacher, I believe that exploring different drumming styles is essential to becoming a versatile drummer. In my drum lessons, I introduce you to a wide range of genres, ensuring that your drumming experience is as rich and varied as possible.

Rock and Roll

One of the most exhilarating styles we explore is rock drumming. With its dynamic beats and powerful rhythms, this is a great genre to start with. I can show you how to play essential rock tracks, helping you develop your drum skills and understand the energy that rock music brings to life.

Jazz and Swing

For those interested in the subtler nuances of percussion, jazz drumming offers a fantastic opportunity to refine your abilities. My lessons include classic jazz techniques and swing beats that enhance your timing and finesse as a drummer. Learning these techniques will not only improve your versatility but also inspire creativity in your music.

Pop and Contemporary

Pop music lessons include learning how to play catchy drum patterns that are prevalent in today's charts. I ensure that students of all ages can relate to and enjoy contemporary pop tracks, making the learning process enjoyable and relevant.

World Music and Other Genres

But we don't stop there—our drum lessons also cover various music from around the world, adding a global dimension to your drumming repertoire. Whether you're interested in Latin rhythms, reggae beats, or even orchestral percussion, we'll explore these together, broadening your understanding and appreciation of the instrument.

Know Your Way Around the Drum Kit

When you're learning the drums, getting to know each part of the kit is crucial. As your drum teacher, I make sure all my students understand their instrument thoroughly. Let's break down the components of a standard drum kit and set you up for success in our drum lessons.

Bass Drum

The bass drum, often called the "kick drum," is the heartbeat of the kit. It's the large drum you play with a foot pedal, providing the foundational beat to any song. In my lessons, we focus on creating steady, solid rhythms that drive the music forward, just like in funk and other genres.

Snare Drum

The snare drum is a versatile part of the kit, producing sharp, crisp sounds. It's crucial for keeping time and adding dynamic accents in your drumming. In our lessons, you'll learn various techniques, including rim shots and ghost notes, to enhance your drum skills.

Toms

Toms come in a variety of sizes and are used for fills and solos. You'll often see them in lots of different music styles, from jazz to pop. As we explore different genres, I'll show you how to incorporate toms effectively in your playing, adding depth and variation to your music.

Hi-Hats

The hi-hats are two cymbals mounted together, opened and closed with a foot pedal. Hi-hats are essential for keeping the beat and adding texture to your drumming. During our sessions, we’ll explore how different hi-hat techniques can transform the way a song feels.

Cymbals

Cymbals, including crash and ride cymbals, deliver bursts of sound that enhance your drum patterns. Crash cymbals are for powerful accents, whereas the ride cymbal sustains rhythms, particularly in genres like jazz. I'll guide you through the proper use of each in our drum lessons.

Additional Elements

Depending on the style of music we're exploring, there might be additional percussion elements like cowbells or tambourines. I'll introduce these as needed, enriching your experience and broadening what you can play.

Understanding these components is a solid first step toward becoming an inspired drummer, and it’s a journey we’ll take together. Whether you're eight or eighty, it's never too late to start learning the drums. With each lesson, I aim to pass on my passion for drumming and help you find your unique voice in the music world.
