I have been teaching singing full time for sixteen years, having studied privately with Howard Milner in Birmingham and London, Jeffrey Talbot in London, Neil Howlett in Lincolnshire, and John Graham Hall. Originally a choral singer, I sang with Ex Cathedra, Birmingham Baroque, The Chamberlain Consort, and was a choral scholar at St Alban and St Patrick Church in Birmingham whilst a student. I was the conductor of the University Chamber Choir and the University Symphonic Wind Orchestra. I moved into opera and oratorio solo singing in 2000 and added lots of music theatre performing. In recent years, although concentrating mainly in the area of teaching, I have been able to perform in productions of Das Rheingold and La Traviata for Secret Opera, Turn of the Screw and Roberto Devereux for Opera Seria, and Gianni Schicchi for William Griffiths Presents, in addition to performing for several choral societies as soloist. I originally trained as a violinist, and also play piano and saxophone. In addition to my vocal teaching and performing, I have been a member of Komposit, a composition workshop run for young composers in the East Midlands. I worked previously as Area Leader for Sing Up in Lincolnshire, through soundLINCS. I am currently working as vocal tutor for the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre degree at the University of Lincoln. Music Qualifications & Achievements: I have a masters degree (MA) with distinction in Voice Pedagogy. Prior to this, my music education has been independent of the college. I am a full member of the Independent Society of Musicians (FISM).

Singing lessons: what to expect
The best singing lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a coach who helps you build your voice safely and consistently. Search by location to find in-person singing lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist vocal coaches for pop, musical theatre, rock, classical, and exam preparation.
Singing lessons are for complete beginners through to experienced performers. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, and adults — whether you’re learning for fun, building confidence, joining a band or choir, or returning to singing after a break.
Most students work on breath control, pitch, tone, range, vocal agility, and song interpretation. A good vocal coach will also help you practise effectively, warm up safely, and build vocal stamina — so you improve without strain.
Online singing lessons can be highly effective for technique, consistency, and flexible scheduling — especially with an experienced coach. In-person lessons can feel more immersive and are great if you prefer face-to-face feedback and hands-on guidance.
A simple learning path for singing
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Learn healthy breathing, posture, warm-ups, and simple exercises to improve pitch accuracy and reduce strain while building confidence.
Develop stronger breath support, resonance and tone control, smoother transitions between registers, and start expanding your usable range.
Improve vocal agility, dynamics, phrasing and expression, build stamina for longer songs, and develop performance skills — tailored to your style and goals.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- No kit required: you can start with your voice, a phone recorder, and a quiet room.
- Hydration and warm-ups matter more than volume — good singing is built on consistency, not pushing.
- If learning online: headphones and a stable internet connection make lessons smoother.
