Student Advice

Learn Proper Vocal Techniques

When it comes to singing, proper vocal techniques are absolutely essential. Breathing is one of the first aspects of singing I like to address because it impacts nearly everything else. Learning how to control your breath through diaphragmatic breathing can instantly improve your vocal quality and help you sustain notes with ease.

Another key part of vocal technique is understanding resonance and placement. This involves knowing how to use the natural spaces in your body, like the chest and head, to add richness and depth to your voice. I’ll guide you through exercises designed to explore different resonances and refine your tone, helping you unlock new dimensions of your vocal ability.

I’m passionate about helping students reach their full vocal potential by exploring a wide range of musical styles and genres.

What to Expect During Lessons

Each lesson is designed to suit your goals and interests. We’ll begin by discussing your favourite songs, the styles you love, and what inspires you musically. From classical music to jazz, gospel, and musical theatre, I cover many genres to help you gain a versatile and well-rounded sound. For beginners, we focus on building a solid foundation, including breathing techniques, vocal range exercises, and improving your musical ear.

A Structured Yet Enjoyable Learning Experience

My lessons always strike a balance between structured training and moments of fun. But most of all, I believe singing should be enjoyable. We’ll cover essentials like music theory and technique while exploring songs that excite and challenge you. Whether you want to get into the music industry, obtain a music degree, or enter a Belfast school like the Royal Academy of music, I’ll make sure the lessons match your goals and passions.

Why Choose My Singing Lessons?

Having worked with musicians and choirs across Northern Ireland, I bring a wealth of experience as a performer and teacher. I’ve taught students of all ages and abilities, both in group settings and one-on-one. My aim is to help you grow in confidence, polish your skills, and uncover your unique vocal style.

Flexible and Accessible Lessons

Lessons are flexible, with options for either half-hour or full-hour sessions depending on your needs and schedule. Whether you’re preparing for a performance, auditioning for a musical, or simply singing for confidence and joy, I’m here to guide you on your vocal journey. The teaching space is located conveniently in Belfast and is easily accessible for students throughout Northern Ireland.

Learn to Apply Music Theory

As a singing teacher, I believe that understanding music theory can transform the way we approach singing. While many people associate singing purely with vocal technique, music theory provides the foundation necessary to interpret and deliver songs effectively. Whether you're preparing for a performance in a music theatre production, jazz concert, or simply taking lessons to refine your skills, having a grasp of music theory will help you connect more deeply with the music.

Connecting Voice and Theory

Music theory teaches singers how to read sheet music, understand rhythms, and recognise key signatures. These are essential tools that come into play during every hour of practice or performance. Knowing how to break down a song’s structure can elevate your ability to communicate its story and emotion, which is incredibly valuable whether you’re aiming to perform in Belfast, Northern Ireland, or beyond.

Applying Theory to Practice

What I love most about teaching music is helping students bring theory to life. For instance, learning about intervals can sharpen your ear for harmonies, making you a stronger jazz or music theatre performer. Being able to listen critically is another key skill that develops through theory, allowing you to analyse songs and improve with every practice. Whether we’re exploring piano accompaniments, tackling difficult passages from a score, or working on dynamics during a lesson, these moments highlight how theory and practical singing go hand in hand.

A Path Towards Musical Independence

By learning music theory, you’ll equip yourself with tools that go beyond the presence of a singing tutor or teacher. It enables you to practice effectively at home, even without guidance, and empowers you to teach yourself new pieces more quickly. Especially in Northern Ireland’s rich music scene, singers with a solid foundation in theory are better prepared to join ensembles, collaborate with musicians, and impress at auditions.

Through my experience teaching in Belfast and beyond, I’ve seen firsthand how music theory can open doors for singers. Whether you’re just starting your music lessons or honing your craft in jazz, music theatre, or other styles, I’m excited to help you unlock the potential of your voice while integrating the power of music theory.

Learn All Styles Including Musical Theatre

When it comes to singing lessons, one of the things I love most as a teacher is helping students explore a wide range of musical styles. Whether you're passionate about the rich storytelling of musical theatre, the improvisational freedom of jazz, or the classical precision of opera, there’s something for everyone. Each style brings a unique flavour and challenge, and part of the joy is discovering where your voice truly shines.

Musical Theatre

Musical theatre holds a special place in many singers’ hearts, blending acting and singing to convey powerful stories. I’ve taught students across Northern Ireland, including in Belfast, how to bring characters to life through song while maintaining strong vocal technique. Together, we’ll work on developing your voice to master the range, emotion, and storytelling required in this exciting style.

Jazz and Pop

Jazz and pop singing allow for creative freedom, and these are styles where your individuality as a performer really stands out. From improvising in jazz to perfecting catchy melodies in pop, I’ll help you understand how music theory enriches your ability to perform and adapt in these genres. Many of my students find that this versatility opens doors for gigs and collaboration opportunities.

Classical and Opera

If you’re drawn to the demanding yet rewarding art of classical singing, we’ll focus on the fundamental techniques that improve vocal power and precision. With my experience as a singing tutor, I’ll guide you through the complexities of this style, ensuring you fully understand the role music theory plays in mastering operatic pieces.

Folk and Contemporary Styles

I also teach folk, contemporary, and other niche styles, helping you explore how your voice can adapt to these unique sounds. Whether you’re interested in Northern Ireland’s rich musical traditions or more modern, experimental styles, we can expand your horizons in singing together.

No matter the style, my goal as a teacher at Singing Lessons Belfast is to help you build confidence in your voice and ability. Having taught singing for years my goal is that with every lesson, we’ll combine practical techniques with music theory to make sure you’re not just singing—but truly understanding and connecting with the music you love.
