Rafael Lopes

Top Rated
Most recent review: 11 Aug 2023

Rafael is a professional jazz & classical saxophonist, composer, and arranger doubling on the clarinet and flute. With a musical career of over 15 years, he has performed both solo and in collaboration with various musical groups. These include his own bands, esteemed musical artists, cover bands, tribute bands and jazz/swing big bands. His performances have taken him to national and international music venues, festivals, and tours ranging on different styles of music. Having graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire (BMus Hons Jazz Studies) and also completing the 8th Grade (ABRSM) on Classical Saxophone Rafael has long been enthusiastic about studying jazz and classical music on the saxophone. During all his formative years and most of his career he has enjoyed every opportunity to share his passion through music by being an inspiring, supportive and encouraging woodwind teacher. Over the last 8 years of private instruction experience Rafael has been working as a Woodwind Teacher (saxophone, flute, and clarinet) on both classical and jazz music. He believes in creating a friendly and professional atmosphere making sure that students feel supported on their individual musical journey, by giving them the knowledge necessary for reaching their personal aspirations. Rafael has helped many students of all levels and ages to make fast improvement. Over the years he has shown high levels of knowledge having taught music theory (classical & Jazz), Jazz improvisation, composition (classical & Jazz) as well as has successfully preparing students for all the different types of exams such as GCSE, A-Level exams, and ABRSM, LCM, LSM, Trinity College London (TCL), RSM, Rock School. Furthermore, Rafael has conducted few practical 15min seminars on “How to play the saxophone” and also 30min workshop on “Jazz Improvisation” for a community jazz big band (Note Benders)   Genre   Rafael is experienced teaching nearly all musical genres but is specialized in jazz and classical music.     First Lesson Typically, the first lesson begins with an introduction and informal chat where Rafael and his students get to know each other and discuss the student’s musical interests and aspirations. Rafael offers a wide range of experiences and is interested in focusing on ways to help each student achieve their maximum potential. Whatever your background, age group or level, whether you coming to instruction for the first time, returning after many years, continuing study after conservatory, preparing for exams or even on a professional path Rafael has enough knowledge. He’s able to adapt his instruction according to individual needs and preferences of each student by providing books, exercises and/or repertoire. In-person lessons usually take place at Rafael’s teaching studio or alternatively on student’s chosen location. Beginners   Rafael understands that starting your journey on learning a new musical instrument can be difficult which is why he’s always a supportive and encouraging teacher towards new students. Beginner students don’t need to have any prior experience whatsoever when it comes to either playing or being able to read music. On the 1st lesson usually there’s no need to own an instrument as Rafael will provide everything necessary and guide each student on the basics of how to play the instrument they’re learning. By the end of the 1st lesson students are usually able to play a few notes on the instrument and have all the basic knowledge needed to start learning and begin their musical journey. To benefit from Rafael’s teaching, it’s recommended that student have their own instrument (Saxophone, Clarinet or Flute) although, Rafael has knowledge on available and affordable instrument hire services as well as provides guidance to all students on purchasing their first instrument.

A kind, patient, and knowledgeable teacher with years of experience teaching to all ages! If you’re looking for a comforting hand to help you or your child develop as a musician, I can help! As a working professional, I have the musicianship and teaching experience to help you push through whatever hurdles you may be facing. I pride myself in my focus on enjoyment for my sessions, I promise fun and productive environment for both my online and in person teaching. Drop me a message if you want that from our teacher! ABOUT THE LESSON: We’re all at our own stages of our musical journey and we all resonate differently to different teachings. Because of this I’m a believer in a reactive teaching style where, as the student, you get to decide what music you want to play to best suit you. I’m able to teach jazz, classical, pop, and other genres all to a high level so no matter what you’re looking for we can find improvements. The first lesson we have together will be more focused on getting to know your playing and finding any faults in technique we can iron out for the next session. From there, we’ll choose music and exercises, specifically chosen to help you develop; to learn between sessions so we can work on them together! It’s important for you to practice independently and I do often set homework; without strong practice we won’t be able to make any progress! ABOUT ME: I’ve been a working professional musician for 5 years, with a resume spanning music festivals both nationally and internationally (Cheltenham Jazz, London Jazz, Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul, Nozstock, and many more). I’ve done international tours to Portugal and Germany, notably having a platform at the Pico Jazz festival in the Azores. My teaching resume includes 1-1 teaching from the ages of 6-80, and 3-years’ worth of group workshop teaching. I’ve seen my teenage students go on to attend music schools across the country such as RBC, WRCMD, and Guildhall. Coming from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire jazz department, my knowledge and skills on saxophone, clarinet, and flute are all the highest standard. Outside of teaching, my main project is pushing my own jazz quartet featuring my own music. I have an enhanced DBS. I would love to hear from you, send me a message!

FAQs about saxophone lessons in Birmingham

Can children learn saxophone in Birmingham?

Yes. Most teachers work with children from age 8 onwards, though readiness depends on hand size and breath capacity. Teachers often recommend starting with alto sax due to its lighter weight and manageable fingering.

Do I need to buy a saxophone before starting lessons?

Not always. Some Birmingham teachers lend instruments for initial lessons, and local music shops offer rental schemes. This lets you try the instrument before committing to a purchase. Your teacher can advise on suitable beginner models.

How do lessons work for complete beginners?

Teachers start with assembling the instrument, correct posture, and breathing techniques. You'll produce your first notes in the first lesson, then gradually learn fingerings and simple melodies. Lessons are paced to your comfort level.

Are there teachers who specialise in teaching adults?

Yes. Many Birmingham teachers work specifically with adult learners who may be starting later in life or returning after a break. They understand the different pressures adults face and adapt scheduling and pacing accordingly.

Can my child prepare for school band or orchestra with private lessons?

Absolutely. Private lessons build confidence and technique that help students contribute more effectively to school ensembles. Teachers can also prepare students for auditions or chair placements.

What if I can only practice a few times a week?

Even limited practice is valuable. Teachers set realistic goals based on your availability. Short, focused sessions (10–15 minutes) done consistently still produce progress, though slower than daily practice.

Do Birmingham teachers offer flexible lesson times?

Many do, including evening and weekend slots to accommodate work or school schedules. Online lessons can offer even more flexibility. Discuss your availability when contacting teachers.

Can I switch between in-person and online lessons?

Most teachers are happy to offer hybrid arrangements — for example, in-person lessons most weeks with online sessions when travel isn't convenient. This flexibility helps maintain consistency.

How do I choose reeds?

Start with medium-strength reeds and adjust based on comfort and tone.

Can I learn online?

Yes — online lessons are effective for technique and repertoire development.
