I completed my degree in Harp Performance at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in 2011. Since then, I have been teaching the harp and the piano both privately and in schools. Following my studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, I accepted the post of Practice Supervisor at Chetham’s School of Music, helping to support the young musicians with their practice and meeting their musical goals for that week. Before moving to York, I was also a Harp Teacher at Chetham’s, as well as Yorkshire Young Musicians in Leeds. My students have achieved very high marks in their exams, as well as being offered places at Chetham’s School of Music. It makes me feel so happy and proud when my students achieve their goals. My teaching philosophy and goal is to foster a life-long love and appreciation for all different styles of music. Not everyone will want to take exams or go to music school, but music can add so much to our lives, my aim is to aid you on your musical journey, wherever you are right now and wherever you want to go in the future. My teaching style on both the harp and the piano is built on a solid foundation of music theory and technique. We’ll spend a small portion of your lessons on music theory if needed. My musical journey started at around age 4, nagging my father to start teaching me the piano as I’d heard him teach his other students from our music room! I was exposed to so much music growing up through my father, who was a conductor and pianist, whether it was orchestras and the theatre or church choirs and recitals, I loved it all. Music brings people together and is a life-long journey. I auditioned and was offered a place at Chetham’s School of Music in 2005 to study the harp and the piano alongside my A-levels, and went to the Royal Northern College of Music after that. Since graduating, I have been a freelance performer and teacher. I play for lots of weddings, local and national orchestras, as well as solo recitals. Highlights have included playing the harp for the 60th birthday concert of the (then) Prince Charles, and playing the harp under the dinosaur in the entrance hall of the Natural History Museum in London. I am also a founding member of CLOUDS Harp Quartet, we play original folk music inspired by the traditional music of Scotland and have released four CDs as well as playing at Edinburgh International Harp Festival, Hidden Door Festival and many other concerts and tours over the years. I am an enthusiastic York based drum tutor and graduate from Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA), with a First-Class Honours degree in Music. I have been teaching the drums for six years and am looking for new students who are interested and willing to develop new skills and learn a new instrument. I'm available for 1-2-1 drum lessons either in-person or online via Skype/Zoom. For my online lessons, I will be set up with a high-quality camera, a miked drum kit, and a vocal microphone for the best experience possible. Within lessons, we can dive into any different aspect of drumming you would like, whether this is grooves, fills, different styles or production techniques. I enjoy tailoring every lesson to the individual student. In addition, I am also a qualified, HCPC registered music therapist. I am a huge advocate of expressive therapy and allowing the learning of drums to develop you not only as a musician but also as a person.

Piano lessons: what to expect
Piano lessons near you
Great piano lessons combine structured technical development with repertoire that inspires you. Search by location to find local teachers for in-person tuition, or choose online lessons to access specialist tutors in your chosen style.
Who piano lessons are for
Piano suits learners of all ages — children, teens, adults and returning players. Lessons can be tailored to beginners, hobbyists, exam candidates, and aspiring performers.
What you’ll learn in piano lessons
Lessons focus on technique, rhythm, reading, ear training, and musical expression. Teachers create progressive plans so you consistently improve week-to-week.
Online vs in-person piano lessons
Online lessons are effective for repertoire, theory and technique when recorded materials and clear audio/video setup are used. In-person lessons offer direct physical guidance and instrument-specific coaching.
A simple learning path for piano
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Develop posture, hand position, basic sight-reading, simple scales and arpeggios, and a practice routine that builds consistent progress.
Expand technique with scales, arpeggios and exercises; learn pieces across styles and build expressive playing and musicality.
Refine interpretation, explore improvisation or accompaniment, and prepare confidently for exams, recitals, or studio sessions.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- A reliable upright or digital piano with weighted keys is ideal — full-size 88-key preferred.
- Piano bench at the correct height helps maintain relaxed posture and technique.
- A metronome and a simple practice plan (20–40 minutes daily) yield far better results than occasional long sessions.
