I am a BMus graduate from Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where I studied classical music, specialising in piano. I teach piano, music theory, composition, sight-reading and improvisation to students of all ages and backgrounds. I started teaching during my third year at RWCMD, having studied with distinguished tutors such as Michael Young, Richard Ormrod and Huw Warren. I have since taught a diverse range of pupils, from complete beginner to more advanced students. The objective of lessons is always to help pianists improve their technique, knowledge and musicianship in order for them to achieve their personal goals, whatever that may be. I enjoy working with students who have a passion for learning the piano and I look forward to solving any pianistic issues that they come across. I believe in everyone’s ability to learn and play the piano regardless of their age, experience, or ability. I use the ABRSM syllabus for my teaching as I find it to be a comprehensive approach to music education. I also use Bartok’s Mikrokosmos for older beginners and Fanny Waterman’s Me and My Piano for children. I aim to give my pupils a holistic education that includes music theory, aural understanding and sight-reading. I also organise annual concerts, giving students the opportunity to develop their performance skills and confidence in a supportive environment. I began formal training in piano and voice at an early age and was awarded a scholarship to study at a specialist music school. This was followed by A Levels in Music, during which I achieved the highest performance grades (8) in both Piano and Singing. In 2018, I graduated from BIMM University with a focus on Popular Music Performance, Vocal Technique, Songwriting, and Teaching. After university, I spent time performing and releasing original music, some of which received airplay on BBC Radio Bristol. I am a singing teacher living in Cardiff who studied BA (Hons) in Popular Music at Nexus Institute of Creative Arts, after earning a Foundation Degree in Primary Education from Northampton University. My passion and experience for both music and educating children are brought together in singing lessons. To help students develop their voice I draw upon my wide-ranging knowledge of vocal techniques, theory and performance skills. My lessons are grounded in my degree studies which included performing solo, performing in a band, music theory, musicianship and understanding of styles. I also have training in studio recording and love students to have the chance to record their songs to take home. My approach to lessons is to nurture joy for music and singing. To do this I make the lessons fun and engaging with lessons uniquely tailored to the student’s areas of interest, whether this be Pop, Musical Theatre, Indie, Rock, Disney or Country. My teaching experience ranges from 1 to 1 teaching, classroom-teaching and running workshops with children and so I can adapt the lessons to how each individual learns with my wide range of teaching methods. Though I have a great passion for seeing children succeed and enjoying music, I do also teach all ages as I believe music and singing is for everyone. Being able to bring someone’s individual voice out and help them find who they are when they sing is the best reward a teacher could ask for! Music Qualifications & Achievements: BA (Hons) Popular Music (Vocals) A-Level Music Grade 6 Piano My performance highlights include singing alongside Kingdom Choir in Birmingham Arena, performing as a member of Only Boys Aloud, playing the lead role in Convicted 2018 and 2019, and being a runner up in the University Gospel Choir of the Year Competition 2018.

Hello My name is Hugh Strathern. I am a professional singing teacher based in Cardiff. Fortunate enough to have spent ten years working as a member of Only Men Aloud, I have plenty of experience which informs my teaching and helps my students. I offer singing lessons for all ages and abilities, teaching people who want to pass exams, or for those preparing for auditions, or people who just want to sing because they enjoy it - for the love of singing. I cater all my lessons towards the aims of the student. Pretty much whatever you want to sing I am willing to teach you, as over the years I have taught, which is more than 15 years now, I have taught most genres of singing from classical and opera, to legit and contemporary music theatre, pop, R&B, jazz, soul, funk, rock and heavy metal. I also teach the piano and keyboard skills as well as music theory to intermediate and advanced levels. All my lessons are taught in a relaxed, informal style at my home studio in Cardiff. My background is manily in classical music and classical contemporary crossover. After studying for a Masters degree in music, I completed a Postgraduate diploma in vocal studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After my studies, I worked as a chorister for the BBC National Chorus of Wales, Welsh National Opera, the Swansea Bach Choir, Bournmouth Symphony Chorus, the Three Choirs Festival and the John S Davies Singers. I was lucky and privileged enough to be a member of Only Men Aloud for over ten years, during which time, I had the opportunity to record two albums on major record labels (Sony and Decca), take part in numerous national and international tours, as well as TV broadcasts, sing in the opening ceremony of the Olympics and win a Classical BRIT, not to mention The BBCs Last Choir Standing competition in 2008! My varied performmance experience has been invaluable in terms of being able to impart knowledge and guidance to my students over the years, whatever their aims. I have a particular interest in singing techniques and in helping people improve this, whether to get better in general or just to be able to sing that one high note that always seems to be out of reach. Sometimes people come with vocal issues issues as well, such as hoarseness, loss of voice, breathiness and huskiness and loss of range. All of these things can be improved by singing lessons and it's always a joy to see a student able to either gain or get their own voice and confidence back, or be even better! I look forward to hearing from you! Music Qualifications: MMus Music Performance UEA 2000 PGDip Vocal studies 2004

Piano lessons: what to expect
Great piano lessons combine structured technical development with repertoire that inspires you. Search by location to find local teachers for in-person tuition, or choose online lessons to access specialist tutors in your chosen style.
Piano suits learners of all ages — children, teens, adults and returning players. Lessons can be tailored to beginners, hobbyists, exam candidates, and aspiring performers.
Lessons focus on technique, rhythm, reading, ear training, and musical expression. Teachers create progressive plans so you consistently improve week-to-week.
Online lessons are effective for repertoire, theory and technique when recorded materials and clear audio/video setup are used. In-person lessons offer direct physical guidance and instrument-specific coaching.
A simple learning path for piano
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Develop posture, hand position, basic sight-reading, simple scales and arpeggios, and a practice routine that builds consistent progress.
Expand technique with scales, arpeggios and exercises; learn pieces across styles and build expressive playing and musicality.
Refine interpretation, explore improvisation or accompaniment, and prepare confidently for exams, recitals, or studio sessions.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- A reliable upright or digital piano with weighted keys is ideal — full-size 88-key preferred.
- Piano bench at the correct height helps maintain relaxed posture and technique.
- A metronome and a simple practice plan (20–40 minutes daily) yield far better results than occasional long sessions.
