After studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA I moved to London and developed a career as a session musician, composer, and teacher. I am a member of the band The Boxer Rebellion and the touring guitarist for Freya Ridings, with both of whom I have toured the world several times. I’ve played many major festivals, TV shows, and radio shows. I have taught dozens of guitar students over the last 10 years, from Beginner to Advanced levels, both privately and in schools. Whether you’d like to learn purely for fun, or take a formal route and prepare for ABRSM, Trinity, or Rockschool exams, I will tailor lesson plans and teaching material to cater to whichever path you choose. Reading music is an excellent skill to possess as a musician but is not vital to learning to play. I’m particularly passionate about teaching children and beginners and giving them a great introduction to the world of music and performance. I am also able to teach more specific skills relating to music theory, composition, and production. I have in-depth knowledge of theory and harmony, as well as Pro Tools, Logic, and other music software. A professional guitarist with over 20 years practical playing experience, I offer online electric guitar lessons to students all around the world. I teach students of varying ages and abilities - whether you're a beginner just looking to play your favourite songs, or an aspiring guitarist looking to take the grades, I always strive to personalise my lessons to each of my students own individual goals. In addition to teaching I work as a session guitarist, with career highlights to date including supporting Jools Holland at The Royal Albert Hall, playing at Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club, and performing to festival crowds of 40,000 with Nick Heyward. Qualifications: BMus Degree in Popular Music Performance, BTEC Popular Music Performance (Triple Distinction), Grade 8 Electric Guitar (Distinction)
I pride myself on being approachable, patient and most importantly structured with my guitar lessons, whether you’re a complete beginner or if you’ve been the guitar for years. Recent students have gained distinctions at Trinity classical exams, RGT and Rockschool exams. Aside from teaching, I am also a freelance guitarist, session musician and composer. I co-lead the group Jazz Menagerie and compose and arrange music for jazz/soul band Jazzelation. Other bands include the Alison Bentley/Ewen Baird Band, French café music trio Les Musettes and the Martin Pickett Organ Trio. I also have DipRSL Music Teaching Diploma in 2015. After playing in rock bands as a teenager, I co-formed my first jazz band, The All-Night Cat-Food Store while at the university. My interest in education led me to study teaching theory and techniques - gaining an RSA diploma in 1994 - while my passion for jazz led him from Oxford to London to study guitar method and music theory with leading UK guitarists, Dave Cliff and John Parricelli.

Guitar lessons: what to expect
Guitar lessons near you
The best guitar lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a teacher who helps you progress with clarity. Search by location to find in-person guitar lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist teachers for acoustic, electric, fingerstyle, rock, or grades.
Who guitar lessons are for
Guitar lessons work for complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced students. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, or adults returning to guitar — with a focus on the styles and songs you actually want to play.
What you’ll learn in guitar lessons
Most students work on chord fluency, rhythm, strumming feel, scales, finger placement, and repertoire. A good teacher will also structure your practice so you build confidence and technique without getting stuck.
Online vs in-person guitar lessons
Online guitar lessons can be highly effective, especially for busy schedules and specialist tuition. In-person lessons can feel more hands-on and are great if you prefer local support and face-to-face feedback.
A simple learning path for guitar
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Learn posture, tuning, chord changes, strumming patterns, and how to practise without building bad habits.
Build a steady sense of timing, expand chord vocabulary (including barre chords), and play full songs with confidence.
Develop picking, fingerstyle, lead basics, improvisation foundations, or exam preparation — depending on your goals.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- Acoustic vs electric: your teacher can recommend what fits your music taste and comfort.
- A tuner + a few picks is enough to start — then add a capo or strap as you progress.
- A simple practice routine beats long sessions: aim for consistency, not intensity.
Styles & goals your teacher can support
Choose a direction — lessons can be tailored around what you actually want to play.
