I’m an enthusiastic and well-established guitar tutor with over ten years of experience. I have taught people from the ages of 5 to 75 and am available to any student, although I mostly teach young beginners. I have taught in three different established music schools as well as having many private students over the years. This has allowed me to really hone my abilities as a tutor and develop the early stages of learning guitar into a streamlined but enjoyable process. I know that results are important in order to keep a student engaged and to provide value for money so I like to get my students up and running straight away. I take a practical approach to teach guitar and encourage students to advance by learning songs they are familiar with and explaining the musical ideas behind them rather than weighing them down early on with theory and repetitive playing. This is a method that works particularly well with children in my experience – I believe it to be the right balance of fun and education. I can teach acoustic, electric and bass guitar from beginner to intermediate ability and I take great pleasure in doing so. Being a multi-instrumentalist, I’m also happy to teach keyboard/piano and ukulele at the beginner level. As a career musician, I compose music and play in a band alongside my tutoring. I’ve written music that has appeared on all the major UK TV channels and I play about 75 gigs a year ranging from weddings to professional corporate functions. I’ve also written educational material for a degree course on composition and arrangement. I’d like to think that the fact that I live and breathe music in this way gives me certain credibility as a guitar tutor and is a reflection of my enthusiasm for the instrument. The Number Seven Music Academy brings together years of teaching and real-world experience of carefully chosen musicians to create a new and exciting way for children to learn contemporary music skills. Each of us is passionate about inspiring a new generation of musicians. We aim to motivate our students to explore their potential… as future performers, writers, session artists or, ultimately, just for the confidence and fun that comes from developing a skill that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. We believe children learn best when high quality teaching is combined with the regular opportunity to play together in a band and to perform live in front of an audience. Our school gigs give you and their friends a regular chance to come and watch them play and to appreciate what they have achieved. A rounded (and employable!) musician can play in any genre and therefore we draw upon a wide variety of styles throughout our courses, introducing influential artists throughout the decades to help our students to understand the ancestry behind what they are listening to today and what they might create in the future. Between us, we have many years of teaching experience giving us a wealth of knowledge about how children learn… Good habits and accurate technique builds a much better platform for success than learning fast and muddling through, so we teach extensively around the Rockschool syllabus, focusing on demonstration followed by fun and varied exercises during which our tutors give tailored guidance to each and every student.

Performance-Driven Teaching I believe the best teachers are those who live and breathe their craft. Currently, I perform over 100 shows a year, and I bring that real-world experience directly into our lessons. My goal isn’t just to teach you notes on a page; it’s to help you reach a level where you can confidently share your music with others. A Proven Path to Mastery While my teaching approach is flexible to your interests, I specialize in guiding students through the Rockschool (RSL) and ABRSM grade systems. I believe in building a "rock-solid" foundation before diving into exams: Foundation Phase: We spend 6–12 months developing your technique, confidence, and musicianship before tackling Grade 1. Advanced Growth: For Grades 2–8, I incorporate 3–6 month "development phases" between exams to ensure your skills are deep, not just rehearsed. More Than Just Music Music is a powerful tool for personal growth. Beyond the certificates, my students develop life skills that translate far beyond the guitar: Confidence in performance and public speaking. Problem-solving and critical thinking. Discipline, multi-tasking, and fine motor coordination. Whether you want to master classical repertoire or shred through a rock set, I am here to help you reach your goals with a structured, professional, and encouraging approach.

Guitar lessons: what to expect

Guitar lessons near you

The best guitar lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a teacher who helps you progress with clarity. Search by location to find in-person guitar lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist teachers for acoustic, electric, fingerstyle, rock, or grades.

Who guitar lessons are for

Guitar lessons work for complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced students. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, or adults returning to guitar — with a focus on the styles and songs you actually want to play.

What you’ll learn in guitar lessons

Most students work on chord fluency, rhythm, strumming feel, scales, finger placement, and repertoire. A good teacher will also structure your practice so you build confidence and technique without getting stuck.

Online vs in-person guitar lessons

Online guitar lessons can be highly effective, especially for busy schedules and specialist tuition. In-person lessons can feel more hands-on and are great if you prefer local support and face-to-face feedback.

A simple learning path for guitar

A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.

Weeks 1–4: Foundations
1

Learn posture, tuning, chord changes, strumming patterns, and how to practise without building bad habits.

Months 2–3: Songs & rhythm
2

Build a steady sense of timing, expand chord vocabulary (including barre chords), and play full songs with confidence.

Months 3–6: Technique & style
3

Develop picking, fingerstyle, lead basics, improvisation foundations, or exam preparation — depending on your goals.

Getting started: what you need

Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.

  • Acoustic vs electric: your teacher can recommend what fits your music taste and comfort.
  • A tuner + a few picks is enough to start — then add a capo or strap as you progress.
  • A simple practice routine beats long sessions: aim for consistency, not intensity.

Styles & goals your teacher can support

Choose a direction — lessons can be tailored around what you actually want to play.
