I play a number of instruments including banjo, ukulele, bass, lap steel, mandolin, mandola, harmonica and keyboard. I have performed in a large number of local bands in the 90s in Coventry and Birmingham but this is historical and I am not active in the live music scene at the moment. Hi! I’m Daniel Carpenter, a professional electric guitarist, composer, and songwriter from and based in Birmingham, I’m keen to pass on my knowledge and experience to students of all ages and abilities! As an electric guitarist, I can teach for both ‘standard’ guitar (6 strings in E standard), and I can teach for extended range instruments such as 7 string guitar, if the student is interested in branching out into that! My guitar teaching comes from a background of gigging, recording, and groundbreaking academic research, so whether you want to play lead guitar in a band, play your favourite songs, or learn theory and prepare for University while playing guitar, I can definitely enrich your playing. For composers, I draw from a multitude of influences, including modern rock and pop, 21st and 20th century classical music, and anything in between, from Takemitsu to Debussy, Birtwistle to Beastie Boys. My philosophy is, if it exists, you can and should learn from it, I hope we get to introduce each other to a lot of new music. Regardless of what your background is and what your intentions are, I can definitely help you and provide you with a new and unique perspective on your writing that can take you to the next level. I can also prepare any student for theory grade exams. I taught myself up to ABRSM grade 8 theory when I was preparing for University, and so I want to provide a more laid back, lower pressure setting, where students can discover the best ways for them to learn and apply music theory. I can also teach theory far above ABRSM standard, and give feedback on Musicological, composition, and analysis based work for University students and aspiring academics. Music Qualifications & Achievements: ABRSM Grade 8 Music Theory BMus (Honours) – 2:1 MA (Music, Composition Pathway) – Distinction Currently studying a PhD in Music Composition, with a focus on the creation of electric guitar repertoire within contemporary classical music. Recording experience has included multiple releases of my own music with CELESTIVL, and I have appeared on recordings alongside members of bands such as Alestorm and Guns N Roses, and gigged and toured extensively. Recent projects include attending the University of Oregon Composer’s Symposium, in which I wrote a new piece for the ensemble Fear No Music, several choir performances at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms, and premiering my new piece for electric guitar and vibraphone in Cyprus in early May.

Guitar lessons: what to expect
Guitar lessons near you
The best guitar lessons near you aren’t just about distance — they’re about a teacher who helps you progress with clarity. Search by location to find in-person guitar lessons, or choose online lessons to access specialist teachers for acoustic, electric, fingerstyle, rock, or grades.
Who guitar lessons are for
Guitar lessons work for complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced students. Lessons can be tailored for children, teenagers, or adults returning to guitar — with a focus on the styles and songs you actually want to play.
What you’ll learn in guitar lessons
Most students work on chord fluency, rhythm, strumming feel, scales, finger placement, and repertoire. A good teacher will also structure your practice so you build confidence and technique without getting stuck.
Online vs in-person guitar lessons
Online guitar lessons can be highly effective, especially for busy schedules and specialist tuition. In-person lessons can feel more hands-on and are great if you prefer local support and face-to-face feedback.
A simple learning path for guitar
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Learn posture, tuning, chord changes, strumming patterns, and how to practise without building bad habits.
Build a steady sense of timing, expand chord vocabulary (including barre chords), and play full songs with confidence.
Develop picking, fingerstyle, lead basics, improvisation foundations, or exam preparation — depending on your goals.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- Acoustic vs electric: your teacher can recommend what fits your music taste and comfort.
- A tuner + a few picks is enough to start — then add a capo or strap as you progress.
- A simple practice routine beats long sessions: aim for consistency, not intensity.
Styles & goals your teacher can support
Choose a direction — lessons can be tailored around what you actually want to play.
Chord progressions, strumming feel, accompaniment patterns, and building a set of songs.
Riffs, power chords, pentatonic shapes, bends, vibrato, and solo phrasing.
Right-hand patterns, independence, tone control, and arranging songs for solo guitar.
Technique, repertoire, sight-reading or musicianship skills, and a clear practice plan.
