Student Advice

Why I Love Teaching Guitar

When I think about the many former students I’ve had the privilege to tech songs and teach technical skills too, I’m reminded of how diverse and personal music can be. Every student brings their own style and goals to the table, and it’s my job—along with other dedicated teachers out there—to help them discover their own voice on the guitar.

Whether we’re working on beginner chords or intricate solos, it’s an absolute joy to pass on the knowledge and passion I’ve gained from years of playing and teaching professionally. After all, music is about connection, and teaching allows me to share that joy with others every single day.

Advice for New Students

Professional Guitar Teacher in Bridlington

Welcome! If you're considering guitar lessons here in Bridlington, I'd love to guide you on your musical journey. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students of all ages and abilities, helping them unlock their potential and achieve their goals—whether that's playing their favourite songs, performing live music, or even writing and recording original songs.

Tailored Lessons for Every Student

I believe no two students are the same, which is why I tailor lessons to match your interests and aspirations. Want to master acoustic guitar and play folk songs? Or maybe you're drawn to the energy of an electric guitar solo? Whether it's basic musical theory for beginners or advanced technique for further musical study, I adjust each lesson to suit your style. My weekly lessons include everything from learning how to play lead parts to understanding rhythm, and I also incorporate techniques from the Rockschool syllabus where appropriate.

Covering Just About Every Style

Having experience performing in several bands that have explored various styles, I enjoy teaching just about every style of guitar music. From rock and blues to funk and pop, my approach is versatile and personalised. I can help you develop the skills you need to perform live music confidently, whether in local gigs or more formal settings.

Focusing on Your Goals

Maybe you’ve just started playing guitar, or perhaps you’re a more advanced player hoping to refine your skills and explore recording techniques. I’ll help you grow your abilities step by step. For those interested, I combine practical skills with theory, so you’ll have a solid foundation to explore music on your own or even pursue further musical study. Many of my former students have gone on to join bands or even become guitar teachers themselves, which makes me incredibly proud.

A Pathway to Creativity

If original songs are your goal, we can work together on songwriting and recording. I’ve been involved in writing my own music for years and understand how rewarding it is to creatively express yourself through guitar playing. Whether you’re interested in acoustic or electric, bass guitar techniques or lead guitar solos, I aim to inspire confidence while making guitar lessons engaging and fun.

Whatever your musical dreams are, I’m here to help you achieve them. Get in touch, and let's start your guitar-playing adventure today!

The Difference Between Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar & Bass Guitar

Acoustic Guitar

The acoustic guitar is often where many of us start our musical journeys, and it’s where I began teaching professionally. This type of guitar produces sound naturally through its hollow body, making it perfect for playing unplugged or in intimate settings. I like to teach students their favourite songs on the acoustic guitar because it helps them connect with the instrument emotionally. It’s also a great choice if you want to focus on learning both skills and music theory without the need for amplifiers or other equipment. Many of my former students have found that mastering the basics on an acoustic guitar builds a strong foundation for exploring other styles of guitar playing.

Electric Guitar

The electric guitar offers a completely different experience. It provides versatility and power, ideal for lead guitar solos and playing with various bands. With an amplifier, an electric guitar opens up a world of effects and tones, making it incredibly fun to experiment with. I enjoy teaching how to make these expressive sounds while focusing on skills that translate into confidence on stage. Many students I’ve worked with have gone on to play in both lead and rhythm roles, showcasing their unique styles. Whether you’re into rock, jazz, or pop, the electric guitar lets your creativity shine.

Bass Guitar

The bass lays the foundation of just about every piece of music you hear, grounding the rhythm and adding depth. It’s shorter on strings but rich in energy, perfect for students who love to groove. Teaching bass guitar helps students understand music theory in a new way, focusing on timing and how to support other instruments. Over the years, I’ve taught bassists who have gone on to join various bands, proving just how indispensable their role in music really is.

Each of these instruments—acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass guitar—offers something unique, and I feel so lucky to teach all three. Whichever one you choose, my goal is to help you build the skills, confidence, and love for music that will carry you forward!

Learn All Techniques on the Guitar

When I first started teaching professionally, one of the things I loved most was guiding new music students through the foundational techniques of playing guitar. Mastering basics like proper finger placement, strumming patterns, and chord transitions sets you up for a lifetime of musical success. These technical skills are the building blocks, and I make it a point to ensure every student feels confident and comfortable as they progress.

Learning Fingerpicking and Picking Techniques

Fingerpicking is one of my favourite techniques to teach because it brings out such a rich and textured sound in your playing. Whether it’s classical fingerstyle or more modern patterns used in folk or pop songs, there’s something incredibly satisfying about watching my students develop precision and fluidity over time. On the other hand, pick work is equally exciting—learning alternate picking, downstrokes, or hybrid picking techniques really opens up your creative potential. Many of my former students have told me how much these skills have shaped their playing over the years.

Exploring Lead and Rhythm Guitar

Teaching the difference between rhythm and lead playing is always a fun challenge. With rhythm guitar, it’s all about learning to support the music, keeping time, and working as part of a team with other musicians. Lead guitar, on the other hand, gives you the chance to shine—learning solos, melodic phrasing, and improvisation calls for a different set of skills that are thrilling to play. I always adapt my teaching style to match my students' unique goals, whether they dream of nailing their favourite solo or holding down the groove in a band.

Advanced Techniques for the Dedicated Player

For those who are ready to take their playing up a notch, I also teach advanced techniques like slides, bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and tapping. At this stage, it’s about refining your precision and tone to really bring your personality into every note. These advanced lessons are particularly exciting because they turn good players into great ones. Seeing my students push themselves and reach new heights is one of the most rewarding parts of being a teacher.
