Jess grew up in a family of professional musicians so from early on, her life was rich with music and people noticed her natural flair and ear towards it. From being put on the stage from very young, whilst her Dad and Mum sang at gigs, maybe it was already decided but she always chose to dedicate her life to music and being on the stage. Also knowing that when she was 8 1/2 years old, learning the lyrics to a Celine Dion song, that she would make the decision there and then that she would be a professional singer and aimed for the big stages.

Being scouted for the gifted and talented selection in her school days, she was noticed early on and coming up into her teenage years she got into a competition and touring choir. This is where she first got her love for being on the road and touring both nationally and internationally. During her later teenage years, Jess was then successful in getting into the regional folk band ‘Folkestra’, based at the music venue, the Sage Gateshead in the north of the UK, as one of the singers and as an instrumentalist. Acclaimed Folk musician Kathryn Tickell headed up the band and it was here that Jess really started to learn her stagecraft as a singer and musician in her own right, often doing sold-out gigs with the band and going on a national tour.

Jess went on to do further work in the regional youth choir ‘Quay Voices’, touring internationally and being successful in getting on to a three-country project. This resulted in an album from the band coming together from the UK, Sweden & Brittany and then finishing with a show, at the Sage Gateshead once more. Once finishing her school education, she wanted to further her music career by studying and took Music Production at one of the top conservatories in the UK, Leeds College of Music, with a speciality in songwriting and in-studio production. Having played many shows, Jess is able to stand up on her own, in front of crowds which would challenge most, bringing an emotive and strong effect to her audiences through her voice and lyrics, making them think when they leave.

Developing her craft further as a performer, writer and producer, Jess then went on to work professionally with her father Roly Johnson in the duo ‘Jess & Roly Johnson’ and played shows and festivals, building a warm sound and a strong platform, which all the time helped prepare her for a solo career.

Having built her platforms in the UK and online around the world, opening for the likes of Alexandra Burke, playing at the Newcastle Arena’s 25th Birthday Celebration and recently featuring on TV web show ‘Nashville Meets World’, one of Jess’s next goals is to travel with her music to America.

Fast forward to 2021, the breadth of Jess’s experience with regard to teaching spans widely. After having completed a BA Honours degree in Music Production at Leeds College of Music, she went on to complete a Community Music traineeship at the Sage Gateshead and from there would become one of the project musicians teaching and leading across a wide range of classes and choirs within the music education centre and out in the community around Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding areas.

To further her career, Jess then branched into a full-time business of her own teaching music privately and working within the school and educational settings teaching music, taking many of her students through the ABRSM examinations. Because of her experience in the studio, she has also been able to add an “extra string to her bow” working with students to develop studio techniques and doing recording sessions and songwriting, which many students have enjoyed.

Jess brings a wealth of industry experience to her teaching as well as professional training in voice and on instruments, whilst bringing warmth and freedom to each session, allowing each student to develop within the safety of the session and for the student still very much able to express themselves. Jess also specialises in working with young people and adults with learning disabilities and can adapt her sessions for many different needs.

Whether you would like to take a more formal route of exams and/ or to go down the professional route or whether it is just for fun, Jess makes sure that each session is tailored for each individual and offers a 100% examination pass rate to date.
