About Pat Garvey

Hello, my name is Pat Garvey. I’m a Brighton based drum teacher and career mentor.

My career as a professional drummer over the past 27 years led me – in 2007/2008 – to discovering a passion for education. Since then I’ve developed my own private teaching studio, completed a masters degree in learning and teaching, PGCert and PTTLS qualifications, and been involved in educational projects all over the world. Within specialist popular music education I’ve held positions as lecturer, module leader, deputy head of department, head of department, digital learning resource manager, and I currently hold a position as Principal Lecturer (drums and academic) at BIMM University.

Within my career in Popular Music Education I have also consulted on course design, led on module writing, schemes of work, moderation, course note writing, course strategy and consultation, assessment delivery, staffing, staff support and management, lecturer support and management, student support and management, and departmental strategy and management.

As a freelance player-educator I run a successful private teaching practice in Brighton where I teach in-person and online. I’ve delivered talks, masterclasses, workshop sessions and support to other teachers, heads of department, course leaders and student support staff at music institutions internationally, featured on panels as a guest at Royal Northern College of Music, UK Drum Show, ACM, Sabian Education Network, LCMP, LIPA and others, and worked with organisations like Help Musicians UK, soundLINCS, Arts Council England and Youth Music, delivering funded community music projects and working with musicians in injury rehabilitation.
I regularly teach as a guest on drum camps including the iconic Freddie Gee Drum Academy, I’ve written over 300 published articles for various drum magazines (including Rhythm Magazine and iDrum Magazine) and webzines, and I work with brands like Sabian, Remo, Marshall, Natal, Vic Firth, Roland, sE Electronics, in a professional capacity all year-round.

I teach all levels including beginners, from age 10 +, and learning differences and physical and neurological disabilities are welcome.
My students range from young beginners, to teachers, hobbyists, amateur professionals to established professional musicians playing with major artists and all in between.

I offer a range of payment options and plans as well as the standard pay as you go weekly and fortnightly lessons, please get in touch for more information.
