About Katie Rawson

Hello, I’m Katie! I believe in a creative, student-lead approach to instrumental learning that blends a well-rounded musical education with what an individual is really passionate about playing. While my teaching is grounded in the classical style, I help players to develop a foundation of skills – including improvisation and composition incorporated into the learning process – that will open doors to other genres too.

I started playing instruments as soon as I was big enough could hold them, and explored a fair few before I found the ones that were right for me. Since then, whether it be an orchestra, pit band, latin band or as a soloist, I’ve not stopped playing!

Because of this, I feel strongly that it can be very valuable for learners to be able to try out an instrument before committing to it. As such, I offer trial lessons, where learners can borrow a beginner clarinet from me during lesson times.

I graduated with a 1st class Music degree from Edinburgh University, where I specialised in Performance and Community Music. Community Music is all about sharing the emotional and social benefits of music, a philosophy I bring into instrumental teaching too! I’ve recently gone back to education to study for a PGCE in Group Instrumental Teaching with the music education charity Music Masters, focusing on ways to break down barriers to music education and to introduce learners to a variety of musical styles through their lessons.
