About Joseph Shibu Mathai

About Me

Hello! I’m a passionate guitar and ukulele teacher with over 4 years of experience in online music education, helping students develop their musical skills, confidence, and creativity. I teach students from different backgrounds and skill levels, from complete beginners taking their first steps to intermediate players looking to improve their technique, musical understanding, and performance.

My teaching focuses on Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and Ukulele, with an emphasis on practical playing, music theory, rhythm, technique, and musical expression. I believe learning an instrument should be both structured and enjoyable. My goal is not just to teach you songs, but to help you understand music and become an independent, confident musician.

I have experience preparing students for structured music courses, graded examinations, and performances. My students have achieved strong academic results, progressed through graded music programmes, and gained opportunities to perform through competitions, online platforms, and music events. I have also worked with students who have completed over 170 hours of individual one-on-one lessons, reflecting my focus on long-term development and consistent progress.

My musical background includes Rockschool (RSL) graded qualifications, including Grade 6 Bass Guitar with Merit, and recognition as a High Achiever in Bass Guitar for North India in 2025. I was also among the Top 50 under-18 guitarists in the SIFF Young Artist 2020 competition. In addition, I have completed music-related courses through Berklee College of Music and the University of Edinburgh, strengthening my understanding of music theory, musical applications, and effective learning.

What can you expect from my lessons?

– Personalised learning: Lessons tailored to your current level, interests, goals, and learning pace.

– Strong foundations: Develop proper technique, rhythm, timing, coordination, and fretboard knowledge.

– Practical music theory: Understand chords, scales, intervals, harmony, and how they apply to real music.

– Song-based learning: Learn songs you enjoy while developing the skills needed to play them confidently.

– Structured progression: Follow a clear learning path, with achievable goals and regular feedback.

– Exam preparation: Get guidance for graded music examinations and structured learning programmes where appropriate.

– Musical confidence: Improve your ability to play independently, perform, and express yourself through music.

I understand that every student learns differently. Some want to play their favourite songs, others want to pursue graded qualifications, and some aspire to become professional musicians. I adapt my teaching approach to suit your individual goals while ensuring that the fundamentals are not overlooked.

My lessons combine patience, discipline, practical demonstrations, and constructive feedback. I encourage students to ask questions, experiment with music, and learn from mistakes rather than fear them. Progress takes consistency, but with the right guidance and practice routine, learning an instrument becomes a rewarding journey.

Whether you want to start learning guitar from scratch, improve your electric guitar playing, explore bass guitar, prepare for music grades, or learn ukulele for fun, I would be happy to guide you.

Ready to begin your musical journey? Book a trial lesson, tell me about your goals, and let’s build a learning plan that works for you. I look forward to helping you become a more confident and capable musician!
