About Emma L
23 years experience – All ages and stages of learner – Online lessons so you can learn from the comfort of your own home – Piano, Music Theory, Recorder, Clarinet, Saxophone – First trial lesson free!
I’m a highly experienced music teacher with 23 years teaching experience working with all ages and stages of learner. I teach piano, recorder, clarinet, saxophone and theory through my own self employed private teaching practice.
I work at the pace and to the interests of the learner. If someone wants to go down the exam route then we can do that, or if they want to learn for fun that is also on offer. I have also helped people with short term musical goals, such as passing exams, or auditions with less than expected notice. I have experience working with those with additional support needs (ASN/SEND) too. I have an excellent pass and results rate with exams, and in particular with music theory exams. I know that every student is different and learns in different ways and at different paces, so you’ll always get a bespoke and learner-centred approach if you have lessons with me. I also have expert knowledge in alternative notation systems (such as Figurenotes) that are ideal for those with learning needs or dyslexia. I also often teach with the help and assistance of my 21 year old cat, Tess! 🐾
I teach predominantly online which works around people’s lives, work schedules, childcare with siblings, and allowing pupils to learn from the comforts of their own home. I offer a trial lesson for free!
In my music career I am a Senior manager for a National music education organisation in Scotland for disabled people, and I also sit on UK and International Boards advocating for music education. I wrote and published a recorder tutor book, Recorder Roundabout in 2008 which is a great fast track learning resource aimed to get children (or any age!) to grade 3 level in less than a year! I am also a member of the professional body, the Independent Society of Musicians. I obtained my BMus Honours Degree from University of Edinburgh in 2005. I am passionate about everyone having equal and equitable access to music!
Over the years I’ve taught many students from beginner to university level, and have had students go on to study music at universities and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. If you are interested in exams, I am happy to go down the routes of both ABRSM and Trinity.
Lesson prices
I operate using a contract drawn up by The Independent Society of Musicians. My contract is as below, and if lessons are taken up through MusicTeacher.com these conditions will be assumed to be agreed to.
The Teacher may serve written notice of an increase in fees to the Pupil (or the Pupil’s parent or carer, where appropriate) by no later than the start of the Series of lessons preceding the Series when the increase in fees will take effect.
Conditions of Music Tuition
1. Lessons
The Teacher will give tuition during school terms (terms are those set by Edinburgh Council). The Teacher will give the lessons at the time agreed and online and the Teacher will reserve this time slot for the Pupil.
By previous agreement between the teacher and the pupil, lessons could be timetabled to take place during holiday periods, in which case lessons will be paid for separately on or before each lesson. With exclusive reference to lessons timetabled during holiday period the pupil will have a right of cancellation, provided that a cancellation notice is communicated in writing by pupil to the teacher not later than 72 hours before the lesson. In case of failure to give such notice, and for any other lesson timetabled during school term, including Public Holidays condition n. 4 will apply
2. Payment of fees
Fees will be payable either in full for each term on or before the first lesson of the term; or on monthly, or on half-term basis, or as otherwise agreed between the School and the Pupil, in advance.
3. Lesson timetable
Before the first lesson of each term, the Teacher will give the Pupil (or the Pupil’s parent or carer) written confirmation of (i) the dates and times of all lessons during that term (ii) the start date for the following term’s lessons.
4. Missed lessons
The Teacher will charge for any scheduled lessons which the Pupil does not attend, unless the Teacher chooses not to do so because of exceptional circumstances. If the Teacher cancels a scheduled lesson, the Pupil (or the Pupil’s parent or carer) may choose between (i) carrying the lesson forward; (ii) receiving a replacement lesson.
5. Examinations, competitions and public performances
The Pupil will not be entered for any examination, competition or public performance without the prior consent of both the Teacher and the Pupil (and the Pupil’s parent or carer, where appropriate).
6. Termination of tuition
(a) This Agreement may be ended by mutual consent at any time by both signatories to it signing and dating a written statement to that effect.
(b) Where fees are not paid on time, the Teacher reserves the right, entirely at the Teacher’s discretion, to terminate this Agreement with immediate effect by giving written notice of termination to the Pupil or Pupil’s parent or carer. This right to terminate is without prejudice to any other rights the Teacher may have.
(c) Either signatory to this Agreement may terminate the Agreement by giving notice in writing to the other signatory at least 4 weeks before the end of a term for the termination to take effect at the end of that term. Such termination will take effect at the end of a term only and not at any other time. If the Teacher gives notice to terminate tuition at the end of a term in accordance with this Condition 6(c) the Teacher will continue to provide lessons until the end of that term.
7. Failure to give notice
Unless terminated under Condition 6 above, this Agreement shall continue from term to term. If the Pupil (or the Pupil’s parent or carer) fails to give full notice to terminate this Agreement in accordance with Condition 6(c) above and the signatories have not agreed to terminate the Agreement in accordance with Condition 6(a) above, the following charges will be made in lieu of notice:
(a) Where the notice given is less than that required under Condition 6(c), but is 4 weeks or more before the start date of the next term: 50% of the fees for the next term;
(b) Where the notice given is less than 4 weeks before the start of the next term: 100% of the fees for the next term.
If the Pupil stops attending lessons during a term, the Pupil (or the Pupil’s parent or carer) is not entitled to a refund of any fees paid for that term. The Pupil is entitled to attend any lessons paid for.
If the Teacher stops lessons without giving the correct notice specified in Condition 6(c) above the Teacher shall refund any fees already paid for any lessons not given.
8. Conduct
If the Teacher, in his or her reasonable opinion, feels unable to continue tuition on account of unreasonable conduct by the Pupil or anyone connected with the Pupil, the fees for any outstanding lessons will not be refundable.
9. Changes
(a) Any changes to the terms of this Agreement must be confirmed in writing and signed and dated by both the Teacher and the Pupil (or the Pupil’s parent or carer).
(b) If the Teacher chooses to waive any right or remedy under this Agreement or otherwise (for example, if the Teacher chooses to waive fees for any lessons which the Pupil does not attend) this shall not mean that he or she must do so in future or that he or she waives any other rights or remedies, unless agreed in writing in accordance with Condition 9(a) above.
10. Communication between the parties
For the purposes of this Agreement written notice must be given on paper or by email.
11. Governing law and jurisdiction
12. This Agreement shall be subject to the laws of the jurisdiction of the location for the lessons (specified above) and the signatories to this Agreement agree that any dispute relating to the subject matter of this Agreement shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of that jurisdiction.
