About drums.education (Chris Merz)

At drums.education, I believe that great drum education is about far more than learning rhythms and technique. It is about building confidence, developing musicality, creating lasting motivation, and helping every student discover their own musical voice. My teaching combines structured learning with a modern, personal coaching approach that supports students from their very first lesson through to advanced professional qualifications.

I specialise in guiding students through the complete RSL Awards (Rockschool) drum pathway, from Premiere and Grades 1–8 to the higher Certificate and Diploma levels. Whether the goal is taking a first graded examination, preparing for university auditions, or achieving internationally recognised teaching and performance qualifications, every lesson is designed around clear objectives and steady, measurable progress.

My coaching philosophy is built on three principles: personal, motivating, and practical. Every student learns differently, so I adapt lessons to individual experience, learning speed, musical interests, and personal goals. Rather than following a rigid one-size-fits-all method, I create an encouraging environment where technical development and creativity grow together. Students are challenged, but they are also supported every step of the way.

The RSL Awards syllabus provides an outstanding framework for developing complete musicians. Beyond drum technique, students learn sight reading, groove interpretation, stylistic awareness, musical vocabulary, improvisation, and performance skills. I help students understand not only what to play, but also why it works musically. This creates confident drummers who are equally comfortable performing, recording, or teaching.

For advanced learners, I also offer specialised coaching for the RSL Certificate and Diploma qualifications. These programmes require a higher level of artistic understanding, critical reflection, performance quality, and professional preparation. My coaching includes repertoire planning, technical refinement, written portfolio guidance, performance presentation, and examination strategy, helping candidates approach these prestigious qualifications with confidence and clarity.

Modern education should inspire curiosity, not simply prepare students for tests. That is why my lessons integrate contemporary teaching methods, educational research, and immersive learning to create engaging practice experiences. Students develop independence, effective practice habits, and the ability to solve musical challenges creatively—skills that remain valuable long after any examination has been completed.

My students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some are complete beginners discovering the drums for the first time, while others are experienced musicians working towards the highest Rockschool qualifications. Regardless of age or ability, every student receives the same commitment: professional guidance, honest feedback, individual attention, and genuine encouragement.

At drums.education, the journey matters just as much as the destination. Every groove learned, every performance completed, and every qualification achieved represents meaningful personal growth. My role is to provide the structure, expertise, and motivation that allow each drummer to progress with confidence, enjoy the learning process, and achieve their full musical potential.
