I am a highly experienced music educator, examiner, and composer with over two decades of professional teaching experience, working with students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. My approach to music education is rooted in professionalism, consistency, and high standards, while remaining engaging, encouraging, and responsive to the individual needs of every learner. I believe that successful music education should be both rigorous and enjoyable as this will foster confidence, creativity, and long-term musical development. I hold a First Class Bachelor of Music degree, followed by a Master’s Degree by Research in Music Composition, awarded with Distinction. My postgraduate work focused on advanced compositional practice and research, developing a detailed understanding of musical structure, style, and creative process. Alongside this academic work, I have published research in a peer-reviewed academic journal examining video-game music composition, exploring the relationship between musical language, technological limitations, and cinematic techniques. This research reflects a broader interest in contemporary composition and the evolving role of music within digital and interactive media. In 2016, I represented my university in person at Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, which recognised the institution’s national contribution to research excellence. Being selected to attend this event was a significant professional honour and highlights my involvement in research-led musical practice at a national level. I have been teaching music since 2002, gaining experience across a wide range of educational settings and learner profiles. In 2006, I was appointed as a department head, a role that strengthened my skills in curriculum design, assessment planning, quality assurance, and mentoring other teachers. This leadership experience played a key role in shaping my educational values and ultimately led to the establishment of my own music school. Within this setting, I continue to teach while also overseeing educational standards, lesson consistency, and the professional development of other tutors. Since 2019, I have also worked as an international music examiner, assessing students both in live examination environments and through online and digital platforms. I examine all instruments across all levels, which keeps me closely aligned with current assessment criteria, performance expectations, and best practice within contemporary music education. This examiner perspective feeds directly into my teaching, enabling me to prepare students thoroughly and confidently for assessments, auditions, and performances. I teach students of all ages and stages, from complete beginners to advanced and vocational learners. I also have experience working with students with special educational needs, adapting lessons thoughtfully to ensure accessibility, clarity, and meaningful progress. Every student is treated as an individual, with lessons carefully tailored to their goals, learning style, and personal interests. My teaching style balances structure with creativity. I place strong emphasis on developing secure technical foundations while ensuring lessons remain enjoyable, relevant, and motivating. Whether a student is learning for personal enjoyment, academic achievement, or professional development, my aim is to provide high-quality music education that builds confidence, musical understanding, and a lifelong engagement with music. Learning music should be fun and engaging. Having worked with learners at all levels and ages across the world I bring a unique perspective to music education and want to help you achieve your musical goals through music you love.

Hi! I’m Jemma (she/her), a friendly and experienced guitarist and teacher in Sheffield. I’m a classical guitarist with the heart of a rocker! Who also loves playing bass… I teach from my home studio and at a private music school in Sheffield and have never loved any job as much. If you are interested in learning to play the guitar, I will tailor a programme of lessons to suit you with clearly defined goals along the way. Each lesson is planned to fit within that framework and get you towards your goal. I teach all ages, all styles, electric and acoustic, beginner to advanced. I have gained valuable experience in education through working as a teaching assistant in primary and secondary schools, and as a learning mentor at Get Sorted Academy of Music in Rotherham. I also spent a few years working with people who have learning disabilities and autism, running music sessions and enabling people to participate and enjoy music. Music is for everyone! My approach to teaching always begins with finding out where you’re at and what you’d like to achieve. From there I will tailor a programme of lessons to suit your level and with clearly defined goals along the way. Each lesson is planned to fit within that framework and get you towards your goal. I have a particular love for Classical/Spanish guitar, and fingerstyle playing. The sound of a nylon string guitar is so warm and rich, and even under the banner of ‘Classical’ you can find music written and performed by people from every continent, across hundreds of years of music. Add to that the shimmer and brightness of steel-string acoustic, and a similarly global treasure trove of music, and you’ve got enough to keep you hooked for many lifetimes! As well as styles and technique, I enjoy teaching sight reading (though it’s by no means a requirement for being a musician), songwriting, music theory, transcribing (figuring songs out by ear and being able to write them down), playing together and jamming – if it’s relevant to you I’ll build it into your lessons. Playing music is one of the great joys in life – get in touch and let’s get started!

Guitar lessons: what to expect
How lessons are delivered across Rotherham
Guitar lessons Rotherham families and adult learners book are delivered in home studios, teaching rooms, online video formats, and sometimes in your own home where travel is practical. Many teachers offer 30, 45, or 60 minute sessions, so lessons can suit children, beginners, and advanced students with different time demand. Guitar lessons can also include shared classes for siblings or friends. This flexible approach helps students hold momentum, pick consistent session times, and keep progress moving without sacrificing work, school, or family commitments.
Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass pathways
Most teachers can teach acoustic guitar and electric guitar from complete beginner level through advanced repertoire. A typical pathway starts with chords, rhythm, and timing control, then expands to techniques for songs, creative ideas, and style-specific playing. If you are interested in bass guitar lessons, many tutors can switch between guitar and bass so students understand groove, support other musicians, and strengthen overall musicianship. Sheffield and Rotherham learners often mix acoustic guitar and electric guitar study to build broader ability and keep playing fun.
Music theory, grades, and long-term development
Strong guitar lessons do more than teach shapes and patterns. Teachers connect practical work to music theory, so students understand why chords, rhythm, and structure work in real songs. Music theory can be integrated in short blocks during each lesson, then applied to playing guitar, songwriting, and music production tasks. Many tutors also support grade pathways and music exams, with clear plans for technique, repertoire, and theory. This structure helps students develop knowledge, improve confidence, and move forward at a pace suitable for their skill level.
Prices, free trial options, and value checks
Private guitar lessons in Rotherham often range from around £25 to £50 per hour, while shorter sessions for beginners can sit closer to £13 to £15. Some teachers offer a low-cost or free trial lesson, especially for new students who want to check teaching style before they book regular sessions. Group classes may reduce cost per person, and online sessions can be an alternative when travel is difficult. Ask for full prices, lesson details, and what is included, so expectations are clear from day one.
A simple learning path for guitar
Most students improve faster when lessons follow a clear sequence linking technique, music theory, and practical repertoire.
Start with posture, pick control, chord changes, and rhythm timing. Add short music theory tasks so every lesson connects sound, structure, and practical playing guitar confidence.
Expand acoustic guitar and electric guitar technique, improve transitions, and build song repertoire. Begin targeted work on timing, dynamics, and grade-focused material where suitable.
Develop advanced skills in styles you love, including songwriting, music production basics, and ensemble preparation, while maintaining steady theory knowledge and performance-ready consistency.
Getting started in music education: what you need
Keep your setup simple first, then upgrade with your teacher after your goals, technique, and practice routine become clear.
- Choose an acoustic guitar or electric guitar that feels comfortable, then bring picks, tuner, and notebook so your tutor can set focused actions every week.
- Use short daily practice sessions on chords, rhythm, and one song section, because regular work delivers better improvement than occasional long sessions.
- Track what felt easy, difficult, and fun after each lesson, then review with your teacher so structure stays suitable and progress remains measurable.
Styles and goals your tutor can support
Lessons can be tailored for enjoyment, grades, songwriting, and practical musicianship, with formats that suit beginners through advanced players.
Build strong chord fluency, rhythm accuracy, and song confidence. This route suits beginners, singers, and students who want acoustic guitar for classes, performances, and home playing.
Develop electric guitar tone, articulation, and lead phrasing while strengthening rhythm parts. Lessons include technique drills, repertoire work, and practical amplifier control for cleaner live sound.
Bass guitar lessons improve timing, groove, and listening with other musicians. Students learn supportive lines, tighter rhythm control, and musical awareness that also improves overall guitar playing.
For students targeting exams, lessons combine music theory, repertoire, and technical checkpoints. This structure helps hold motivation, develop knowledge, and keep measurable progress across each term.
Creative learners can combine guitar work with songwriting and music production. Lessons cover idea development, arrangement aspects, and practical recording workflows for students interested in original music.
