Lessons Tailored To You
I studied cello with Hannah Roberts (current teacher of Sheku Kanneh-Mason) at Chetham’s School of Music, where I won a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music. I am an experienced freelance orchestral and chamber musician, having performed in leading UK venues with renowned groups. I have recently played section principal with the British Philharmonic Orchestra, performed with Caroline Pether (leader of Manchester Camerata) on a quartet project and am a member of the innovative Sterling Ensemble, with an upcoming lunchtime concert at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

Composition and Contemporary Works
For those with an interest in creating their own music, the cello serves as an inspiring tool for composition. Many advanced students, once graduated from beginner level, discover a passion for writing and arranging. Our cello school supports this curiosity with guidance in composing original music, thus further integrating a comprehensive musical education.
By covering various genres through individualised or group tuition, each cello student experiences a well-rounded musical journey. Whether through classical training or exploring innovative styles like contemporary pop, my goal as a teacher is to nurture each musician's unique voice and foster an authentic connection to their music.

Learn to Apply Music Theory
As an experienced cello teacher, I can't emphasise enough the importance of integrating music theory into cello lessons. Understanding music theory enriches your playing experience, and here's why:
Enhancing Your Musical Skills
Music theory provides the framework for understanding how music works. By learning to read sheet music and understanding key signatures, rhythms, and chord structures, students in my cello lessons in Altrincham gain a deeper insight into the music they play. This knowledge allows you to interpret compositions more thoroughly and enhance your overall musical skills.
Fostering Better Comprehension
Incorporating music theory into your music education lays a strong foundation for creativity and improvisation across all age groups. It enables students to connect with other aspects of music, such as composing and arranging their pieces. This is particularly beneficial for advanced players who aim to diversify and explore various genres.
Connecting with Other Instruments
Understanding music theory enhances your ability to play in ensembles or orchestras, where you’ll collaborate with other musicians playing the piano, violin, guitar, or even the alto sax. It bridges the gap between different instruments, making it easier for my students to transition skills and develop a more comprehensive musical education.
Supportive and Professional Environment
In my cello school, I strive to maintain a supportive environment where pupils of all levels—from beginners to those preparing for university-level grade exams—feel encouraged and inspired. Having a professional teacher guide you through music theory not only boosts your confidence but also nurtures your growth as a musician.
Practical Application and Beyond
Whether you're already taking alto sax lessons, venturing into online music tuition, or delving into new instruments like clarinet, drums, or mandolin, music theory empowers you with the abilities needed to excel in any musical journey. My music lessons are designed to be inclusive and adaptable, ensuring each student maximises their potential, regardless of their prior experience.
By embedding music theory into our lessons, I aim to provide a holistic music tuition experience that truly unlocks our students' potential as musicians, whether they aspire to play for personal satisfaction or as professional performers. Together, we'll explore the world's musical wonders and develop an expansive understanding that will benefit you throughout your life.
Private Lessons in All Genres That Are Music School Quality
As I guide my students through their musical journey, one of the most exciting parts is exploring the diverse range of genres that can be learned on the cello. From jazz and classical to folk and pop, you can delight in the versatility this instrument offers.
Classical Excellence
Classical music forms the foundation of many musicians' journeys. I teach my students to appreciate the great composers, such as Bach and Beethoven, whose works are timeless. Through expert music tuition, whether at our music school or through online lessons, my pupils gain technical skills and a deeper understanding of phrases and expressions to help perfect classical pieces.
Jazz and Improvisation
Jazz offers the perfect avenue for students to experiment and improvise. By working with professional teachers, learners can explore jazz standards and experience the soulful rhythms that make this genre unique. Jazz cello lessons present a chance to collaborate with pianists, saxophonists, and even flutists.
Folk and World Music
Folk music introduces children and advanced students alike to diverse cultural traditions. My teaching approach incorporates playing by ear alongside reading sheet music, broadening students' horizons and welcoming world music influences into their repertoire. Participation in folk groups or orchestras also provides dynamic group experience.
Pop and Modern Hits
Playing pop music on the cello can be immensely rewarding. I encourage my students to explore modern pieces they've heard on the radio or in digital formats, which reinforces their traditional music education. Lessons often involve creative covers where pupils play their favourite songs, allowing them to connect personally with their instrument.

Learning to play the cello is a rewarding and enriching experience, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way. Based in Altrincham, I offer engaging, personalised lessons that allow you to progress at your own pace. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced player, I’m committed to helping you discover your potential and develop both skill and confidence with this wonderful instrument. I look forward to joining you on your cello-playing journey!
