Sarah Wagner’s interest in bringing theatricality to classical music has led her to perform in a diverse array of locations ranging from the Palace of Auburn Hills with Detroit-based rapper Eminem to underneath motorway bridges in Glasgow to the throne room of Buckingham Palace. Her ongoing performance piece Under the Bridge is a collaboration with After the Pandemic and combines Vivaldi’s iconic The Four Seasons with original street art beneath the Kingston Bridge. The filmed performance of “Summer” was featured in the Scotsman, the Sunday Post, and on BBC Radio Scotland. Under the Bridge culminated in a live performance of The Four Seasons at Glasgow Cathedral during the United Nations COP26 conference in Glasgow. Sarah works primarily in the theatre, having performed across the United States, Scotland, Germany, and Italy in over 50 different productions ranging from classical opera to contemporary musical theatre. In addition, her work as a recitalist focuses on the narrative aspects of instrumental music and uses classical music to tell contemporary stories. As a teacher, Sarah has a range of experience working with students of all ages in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. She believes in a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to music education by combining technical pedagogy with a diverse repertoire of classical, pops, and traditional music. Sarah received her Bachelor’s of Music (high honours) in violin performance and educational studies under the tutelage of Wen Lei-Gu from Lawrence University and her Master’s of Music and Advanced Postgraduate Diploma while studying with Andrea Gajic at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Music Qualifications & Achievements: My teaching expertise is varied and comprehensive encompassing both academic work and practical experience. During my undergraduate studies at Lawrence University, I studied music education on both instrumental and general music tracks. This dual path ensured I studied string-specific pedagogical methods such as Suzuki, Galamian, and Flesch as well those designed for use in general music classrooms such as Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Orff. Having a well-rounded understanding of these different pedagogical methods enabled me to adapt my teaching to a variety of different settings ranging from the Appleton String Project after-school program to the summer I spent volunteering as a violin tutor in Haiti. Upon graduating, I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where I began teaching privately and worked with students ranging from ages 4 through 18. One of the greatest benefits of individual music instruction is the ability to tailor your teaching to each student’s unique needs and interests. I believe it is this passion for meeting every student where they are, and then guiding them to take the next step, that enabled me to increase the size of my private studio from 5 to 25 students.
Hi! I have been teaching violin for several years both privately and through Muswell Young Musicians in London and I teach beginner and intermediate violin, up to Grade 5. I have experience with students of all ages and abilities, and particularly enjoy working with beginner students, no matter their age. My youngest pupil was 4 years old. I also have experience with students who need extra support in learning, particularly students with Autism. I aim to provide lessons that are fun – I want you to love the violin! The more you love to play, the easier it is to remember to practice at home. We will be learning music theory as we go, so you can better understand what you’re playing. I also combine learning violin with lots of singing in the lessons to help with ear training and general musicanship, drawing on Kodaly Method. We will focus on listening skills, reading music, improvising, as well as technical and musicianship skills required to play the violin. I trained in Violin (Grade 8 RCME) and music theory (Grade 2 RCME), as well as theatre performance, in Canada. I am a friendly and encouraging teacher. I have a BA in theatre, and I love to explore storytelling and emotional expression through music. I am a classical violinist, but will be excited to explore different styles with you, from trad. music to pop covers, whatever makes you excited to play music! I have taken several students through their ABRSM exams, and am confident to help you through that, up to Grade 5. I also think there is value in playing without being graded, so please let me know what your goals are when we start so I can help guide you. I check in often about your goals and how you are finding playing so that lessons are tailored to your experience. Practicing performing is very important as well, and I make sure that we have several informal concert opportunities through the year, whether that is performing for other students, or for your family, or some friends. Lessons can be 30, 45, or 60 mins. You will need your own instrument. I can help with sizing and recommendations if you have any questions! If you have begun playing already, please bring any music with you so I can see where you are up to. If you and a friend, or two siblings would like to start with group lessons, please do speak to me. The pricing and timing will be slightly adjusted, and I will want to make sure that the participants are well matched, but I am happy to explore the idea with you, even if just to start with! If you have any questions, please do get in touch. I hope to hear from you! Eleanor. Music Qualifications & Achievements: I have my Grade 8 RCME (the Canadian equivalent of ABRSM) and my Grade 2 Theory. I am currently studying my Masters in Theatre Directing.
I am currently in my third year teaching for Glasgow City Council, providing free music lessons for children in their schools. I teach children starting at age 4 Piano, Singing and Violin. My lessons are a mixture of solo, group and classroom. I have been teaching private pupils for 10 years and they have ranged from the age of 3 to 70. If you are interested in taking exams, I have a great record of success from the ABRSM and Trinity Boards. Due to many years of experience, I am extremely adaptable to all of my pupils’ needs and styles. I am completely passionate about teaching and passing on my skills, knowledge and love of Music and the Instrument. Music Qualifications & Achievements: In my early teens, I achieved Distinction marks in my ABRSM Grade 8 exams in the Piano, Violin and Singing. I was extremely fortunate to study the Piano and Violin at Chethams School of Music, Manchester. This specialist and dedicated education taught me the discipline and skills needed to become a professional musician. I then gained a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in 2014. There I studied Violin, Voice and Piano Skills. After my undergraduate degree, I completed a Master of Arts in Singing at the Royal Academy of Music, London. My performances have taken me to the great venues of the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall (London) and Royal Concert Hall of Glasgow and Edinburgh. I also enjoy travelling through Europe and China performing as a soloist and with professional ensembles.
