About Yotham Ben Yami

I’m a composer and piano teacher with four years of teaching experience, and I hold a BMus, MMus and MA from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Alongside teaching, I work professionally as a composer, with a particular interest in opera, contemporary classical music and collaborative music-making. My background as a composer strongly shapes the way I teach: I like students to understand not only how to play or analyse music, but how it is put together and why it works.

I teach piano from complete beginner to intermediate level, as well as composition, music theory, orchestration, arranging and aural skills. Lessons are flexible and adapted to the individual student rather than following one fixed method. Depending on the student’s goals, lessons might include repertoire, technique, practice coaching, theory, ear training, improvisation, composition or detailed feedback on their own music.

I enjoy working with children, teenagers and adults, including complete beginners and returning players. Some students prefer to work towards graded exams, while others simply want to develop their musicianship, explore music more deeply or learn for enjoyment.

My aim is always to make lessons thoughtful, practical and engaging, while giving each student a strong musical foundation and the confidence to develop in their own direction.
