Biography
I’m Robert Brutus—although my students know me as Uncle Bob. I’m a classical guitarist, retired software developer, and dedicated guitar teacher based in Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

My musical journey began in the culturally rich Caribbean when I was 14 years old. Two of my uncles were enthusiastic guitar players, and the sounds they created inspired me to pick up the instrument and begin exploring it for myself. During my teenage years, I spent countless hours practicing, listening, and developing a lifelong appreciation for the classical guitar.

After high school, I moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, to attend college. I continued studying and playing guitar while completing my education and learning from musicians with different backgrounds and musical perspectives.

Following college, I began a rewarding career in software engineering. Although my professional responsibilities kept me busy, music remained an essential part of my life. I continued playing guitar while raising a family with my wife, including our four daughters. Today, we are also blessed with eight grandchildren.

After retiring from software development, I was finally able to devote more of my time to my first love: playing and teaching the guitar. In 2020, I began welcoming students into my home studio in Plattsmouth and teaching students online.

My software-development background influences the way I teach. I believe complicated ideas become easier when they are divided into clear, manageable steps. My lessons are structured, visual, patient, and encouraging. I adapt the learning process to each student rather than expecting every student to learn in exactly the same way.

I welcome children, teenagers, adults, seniors, complete beginners, returning guitarists, and neurodiverse learners. My instruction is built upon a classical-guitar and adapted Suzuki foundation, with attention to proper technique, tone production, music reading, rhythm, music theory, fingerstyle playing, and expressive musicianship. Students may also apply these foundations to folk, worship, country, rock, and other musical interests.
Local Guitar Lessons
I provide private, in-studio lessons from my Plattsmouth, Nebraska studio. I serve students from Plattsmouth and surrounding communities, including Bellevue, Papillion, Omaha, and Council Bluffs.

Local students receive personal instruction, structured practice guidance, progress assessments, and access to learning tools designed to help them practice more confidently between lessons.

My goal is to create a welcoming environment where students can learn without embarrassment or unnecessary pressure. Mistakes are a normal part of learning, and every student deserves the time and encouragement needed to succeed.
Self-Directed Study—Nationwide and Worldwide
For students who do not live near Plattsmouth—or who need a more flexible and affordable learning schedule—I also offer an online Self-Directed Study program.

The program is available to students throughout the United States and worldwide. Students can study from home, progress at a comfortable pace, and use structured lessons and practice tools without being required to attend a private lesson every week.

Self-Directed Study students may schedule individual online coaching sessions when they need personal assistance, want help solving a particular problem, or are ready for an assessment before advancing to the next level. This combines the flexibility of independent learning with access to a real teacher when guidance is needed.

Live online instruction is also available for students who prefer regular private lessons but live outside my local service area.

Musical Philosophy
I believe music is a universal language that can cross cultural, geographic, and generational boundaries. Learning to play the guitar is not simply about memorizing notes or completing a method book. It is about developing confidence, patience, discipline, creativity, and the ability to communicate through music.

My teaching philosophy emphasizes strong foundations, expressive playing, and enjoyment of the learning journey. Every student has different goals, abilities, challenges, and musical interests. I work to understand those differences and create a learning path that is both structured and personal.

Students are never too old to begin, and they do not need previous musical experience. They only need curiosity, reasonable practice, and a willingness to learn one step at a time.
Hobbies and Interests
When I’m not teaching or playing guitar, I enjoy spending time with my wife, four daughters, and eight grandchildren. I also enjoy studying music history, exploring educational technology, playing piano and violin, and developing new tools that make music education clearer and more accessible.

After beginning my own guitar journey at 14, I understand how one encouraging musical influence can last a lifetime. My hope is to provide that same encouragement to every student—whether they study with me locally in Plattsmouth or participate in Self-Directed Study from somewhere across the country or around the world.
