About Robert Shiau
I’m a piano and drum instructor who believes students make the best progress when strong fundamentals are paired with music they genuinely enjoy.
My lessons are individualized and practical. Depending on each student’s age, level, and goals, we work on reading, rhythm, technique, theory, scales, ear training, coordination, improvisation, performance, and musical expression. I want students to understand what they’re playing, not simply memorize notes or repeat exercises.
On piano, I use a balanced approach that can include Faber Piano Adventures, theory, scales, sight-reading, classical repertoire, contemporary music, and other materials that fit the student. On drums, I focus on timing, groove, rudiments, reading, coordination, dynamics, fills, and learning how to play musically with others.
One of my biggest goals is helping students become independent musicians. I teach students how to practice effectively, recognize patterns, solve problems, listen carefully, and gradually develop their own musical voice.
Every student learns differently, so I adjust the pace, explanations, and structure rather than forcing everyone through the same path. I’m comfortable working with students who benefit from additional patience, repetition, structure, or flexibility.
My background includes piano, drums, percussion, contemporary music, improvisation, and performance coaching. I continue to study music pedagogy and musicianship so that my teaching continues to grow alongside my students.
Whether the goal is building strong fundamentals, playing favorite songs, preparing for performances, improving musicianship, or simply becoming more confident at an instrument, my goal is to provide a clear path forward while keeping music enjoyable and meaningful.
