About Matthew Tifford

I’m the founder of the Tifford Cello Studio in North Bethesda, Maryland and have spent over 30 years helping students grow as confident, expressive musicians. I earned my Master of Music from the Peabody Conservatory and have served as Past President of the MD/DC Chapter of the American String Teachers Association, presenting at national conferences and being honored with a State Leadership Award. My students regularly earn recognition in competitions and perform with top regional ensembles like Maryland All-State and the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras. Alongside teaching, I’ve had the opportunity to perform internationally, collaborate with artists like Dave Matthews, and record for major projects including National Geographic soundtracks—experiences I bring directly into my teaching.

I work with students of all skill levels ages 7-100, from beginners building a strong foundation to advanced players refining technique and preparing for auditions or performances. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals and interests, with a focus on developing solid technique, expressive musicality, and lasting confidence.

Using traditional classical methods, my teaching style is supportive, engaging, and results-driven, helping students grow at their own pace while staying motivated and inspired. Whether you’re starting for the first time or looking to take your playing to the next level, I provide the guidance and structure you need to succeed.
