About

About

I am a professional musician and music teacher working in Liverpool. I am proficient in a number of styles on both guitar and piano and have 10+ years of experience teaching students ranging in ability from beginner to a grade 8 standard. I have worked in a range of settings from private music schools to working with local music services, independent schools, FE colleges and universities. I currently teach privately and as a visiting guitar tutor for Hope University in Liverpool working with students on their music course.

As well as studying teaching and community music modules at university I have received training as a music service employee and completed ABRSM’s How to be a better music teacher course.

I can travel to you for lessons depending on location as well as having the facility to offer high-quality online lessons via Skype, Zoom and FaceTime. I have an up to date CRB certificate and a good knowledge of the Trinity-Guildhall, Associated Board and Rock School syllabuses for guitar, electric guitar, piano, bass guitar, jazz piano and music theory.

Music Qualifications & Achievements:

studied classical guitar and electric/jazz guitar at Birmingham Conservatoire where I was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree with first-class honours. Whilst there I had the privilege of taking lessons masterclasses with some of the world’s top guitarists such as Gary Ryan and John Williams. I also hold ABRSM Grade 8 in piano.

After my degree I worked for a number of years as a musician and Music Director on cruise ships, traveling the world and playing music on a nightly basis at a with top-class international musicians.

Since 2014 I have lived in Liverpool where I have worked as a freelance musician and occasional MD in concerts, theatre productions and private functions. Some of the highlights of my playing career have included concerts given at the Liverpool Philharmonic and The South Bank Centre. In 2009 whilst still at university, I performed at Glastonbury Festival and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. In 2017 and 2018 I played Guitar, Mandolin and Banjo as part of the house band for the Liverpool Everyman’s award-winning Rep Company and have played guitar and keyboards in a number of other productions at theatres around the country.

“Matthew has been teaching me for more than 5 years now, since I was 8 years old. His lessons are fun, interactive, and he is always very kind. He makes sure you know what to do in a friendly, helpful manner and I have thoroughly enjoyed learning guitar and piano with him over the years. I highly recommend Matthew if you are looking to or already play guitar or piano as he is a great teacher and a very kind person.”

“Matt is a great online teacher. He is really attentive to the issues in my playing, and always looking to offer targeted video advice and feedback. He constantly enriches his teaching with backing tracks, improvisations and sight-reading exercises. It’s a pleasure to be taught by someone who is knowledgeable, encouraging – and very patient!”

“Matthew has been my daughter’s piano teacher since April 2015. His various teaching methods work wonderfully despite her sight disability and the occasional hearing impairment, ensuring an enjoyable learning experience. He teaches with patience and highly capable of transferring his musical skills and knowledge to his students.”
