About Leon Michael King

Welcome! I’m Leon, and I am a professional touring guitarist, session musician, producer, and music educator with over 20 years of real-world experience in the music industry.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of touring the globe, recording, and collaborating with a wide range of renowned artists, including Joss Stone, Paolo Nutini, Akala, Nneka, Roots Manuva, and Natty, alongside many other incredible talents. Whether performing on major festival stages, recording in world-class studios like Konk Studios, or working from my own professional studio setup in London, music has been my life’s passion.

Since 2000, I have been equally dedicated to passing along this wealth of practical knowledge to students of all ages and abilities. My core philosophy as an educator is simple: learn to jam, create, and play guitar with anyone, anywhere.

Teaching Philosophy & What to Expect

Music education should never feel like a rigid, robotic chore. While technical proficiency and music theory are essential foundations, I believe they are best taught within a real-world musical context.

When you learn with me, you will learn how to apply every concept, such as theory/scales, directly to real songs, improvisation, groove, and creative expression. My aim is to equip you with the practical tools, musical confidence, and creative freedom needed to play comfortably alongside other musicians.

Every student is unique, which is why I offer fully customised lesson plans tailored around your personal goals, musical taste, and learning pace. Whether you are picking up the guitar for the very first time, preparing for auditions, want to get your Grades, looking to unlock complex fretboard theory, or refining your studio performance skills, we will build a clear, structured roadmap to get you there.

What We Can Cover in Lessons

I teach a comprehensive range of topics for Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Bass, and Music Production/Songwriting:

  • Core Fundamentals & Technique: Master proper posture, picking techniques, fingerstyle, rhythm precision, tone control, and fretboard fluency without building bad habits.
  • Improvisation & Jamming: Learn how to navigate chord progressions smoothly, solo with feeling, understand modal harmony, and develop a strong musical ear.
  • Genre-Specific Styles: Deep dive into Soul, R&B, Funk, Reggae, Blues, Rock, Pop, and Contemporary styles, drawn directly from my experience performing these genres on international tours.
  • Music Theory Made Practical: Demystify harmony, chord construction, rhythm notation, and song architecture in a clear, digestible way that directly benefits your playing.
  • Songwriting, Production & Studio Skills: Learn how to arrange guitar parts for recordings, craft high-quality guitar tones using amplifiers and effects, and navigate home recording setups.
  • Performance & Mentorship: Gain insights into stage confidence, band dynamics, professional rehearsal etiquette, and navigating the modern music industry.
