About Konstantin Novgorodsky
Hello! My name is Konstantin Novgorodsky, and I am a professional composer, arranger, pianist, and music educator. I offer online lessons in music composition, piano, music theory, harmony, ear training, arranging, orchestration, and film scoring. Whether you are just beginning your musical journey or already have considerable experience, I would be happy to help you develop your skills, deepen your understanding of music, and discover new creative possibilities.
My Background and Professional Experience
I am currently studying composition at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. My musical education began at the Gnessin Special Music School in Moscow, where I studied piano, and continued at the Gnessin Music College, where I studied sound engineering and arranging under Andrey Zubets.
Alongside my studies, I have developed a professional career composing and arranging music for films, theatre, animation, and musical theatre productions. My work includes the feature film Seven Versts Before Dawn, for which I was one of three composers, as well as music for three theatrical productions in Russia.
My compositions have received international recognition, including First Prize at the 2024 Yuri Kholopov International Composition Competition, First Prize at Classical Music Stars, and a Bronze Award at the 2023 Machang Animation Festival.
I have approximately eight years of teaching experience, working with students of different ages, abilities, and musical interests. Since 2024, I have also taught harmony and solfège at the Gnessin School in Moscow.
My Teaching Approach
I believe that learning music should be about much more than memorizing rules, repeating exercises, or playing the correct notes. Understanding how music works is what allows us to become independent musicians, make artistic decisions, and express our own ideas.
My lessons combine classical musical training with creativity and practical musicianship. Rather than following exactly the same curriculum with every student, I adapt the lessons to your interests, experience, and long-term goals.
Piano Lessons
In piano lessons, we can work on technique, repertoire, musical interpretation, phrasing, harmony, and musical structure. I encourage students to understand not only how to play a piece, but also why the music is written the way it is.
We can explore the relationship between harmony, form, rhythm, and expression, helping you develop a deeper connection with the music you perform.
Composition, Arranging and Film Scoring
If you are interested in composing your own music, we can work through the entire creative process, from your first musical ideas to a complete, professionally prepared score.
Lessons may include melody, harmony, counterpoint, musical form, instrumentation, orchestration, arranging, and developing musical material. We can analyse classical and contemporary works, experiment with different compositional techniques, and develop your own musical language.
For students interested in film, theatre, or video game music, I also offer lessons in writing music to picture, thematic development, musical dramaturgy, MIDI mockups, virtual instruments, and working with digital audio workstations (DAWs).
I can also help you prepare your compositions for performance, recordings, competitions, or music school and conservatory applications.
Music Theory and Ear Training
I teach music theory, harmony, and ear training both as independent subjects and as part of piano or composition lessons.
My aim is to make theoretical knowledge practical and meaningful. We can study harmonic progressions, voice leading, counterpoint, musical analysis, dictation, sight-singing, and aural recognition, connecting these skills directly to the music you play, hear, or compose.
Who Are My Lessons For?
I welcome children, teenagers, and adults, including beginners, intermediate students and those preparing for further musical education.
You do not necessarily need to choose only one subject. For example, a piano student may also want to understand harmony or try composition, while a composition student may benefit from additional ear training or keyboard skills.
Above all, I want lessons to be engaging, intellectually stimulating, and creatively rewarding. My goal is to help you become not only a more capable musician, but also a more curious, confident, and independent one.
