Jackson Medlow

Hi, I’m Jackson, a professional musician, singer, guitarist and songwriter based at Timber Mill Music Studio in Southwater, West Sussex. I have been playing guitar, singing, writing songs and performing live for more than 25 years, and I love helping other people discover how enjoyable and rewarding making music can be.

I offer guitar lessons, singing lessons, vocal coaching and songwriting tuition for beginners through to more experienced players and singers. Lessons are relaxed, friendly and tailored to the individual, whether you are picking up a guitar for the first time, want to improve your singing, are working towards an RSL Awards Rockschool grade, or simply want to become more confident playing and performing your favourite songs.

My teaching covers acoustic and electric guitar, contemporary vocals, songwriting, performance and musicianship. I can help students develop chords, rhythm, strumming, riffs, lead guitar, song structure, vocal technique, pitch, phrasing, breath control and performance confidence. I also enjoy helping students understand how all of these skills fit together when actually making music, rather than learning techniques in isolation.

I am particularly interested in helping students who want to learn contemporary music and develop their own musical style. I have a strong background in rock, pop, singer songwriter and alternative music, and my own musical influences include artists such as Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco, Fleetwood Mac, Pearl Jam and Incubus.

I also offer RSL Awards Rockschool grade preparation for guitar and vocals. If you are working towards an RSL grade, I can help you learn and prepare your pieces, develop the technical and performance skills required, and build confidence for your exam. I believe graded music should be enjoyable and musical rather than simply feeling like a test, and I aim to make the preparation practical, encouraging and relevant to the student’s wider musical goals.

For beginners, there is no need to worry about already knowing anything about music. We can start exactly where you are and build things up at a comfortable pace. For more experienced musicians, lessons can be focused on specific areas that you want to improve, from technique and repertoire to songwriting, performance and confidence.

I also have extensive experience performing live as a singer and guitarist, both as a solo musician and as part of bands. This means I can bring real performance experience into lessons, including how to prepare a song, work with a microphone, accompany yourself while singing, develop a live set and feel more comfortable performing in front of other people.

My studio is based in Southwater, close to Horsham, and I teach students from Southwater, Horsham and the surrounding West Sussex area. Home visits and online teaching are also available.

Most importantly, I want lessons to be something you look forward to. Whether your goal is to pass an RSL grade, learn your favourite songs, improve your voice, write your own music, prepare for a performance or simply become more confident with an instrument, we can work together to make steady progress while keeping music at the centre of it.
