About irene muriithi
Irene Wacuka Muriithi is a qualified music educator with a Bachelor of Education degree (Music and French) from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya, and who has 30+ years of teaching experience. She very passionately believes that music plays an integral role in an individual’s intellectual, personal, creative and social development. This belief came through having taken up music as a student in high school and having been very active in all school music activities. She has taught classroom music for several years now (both public and private school) right from kindergarten to A level students and assisted in musical several music productions especially in the early years department. She has also taught and conducted choir to different age groups through the years and run a number of school music clubs. She plays piano, descant and alto recorder, guitar and ukulele and in addition, she has trained kindergarten teachers on how using music in the classroom enhances learning and understanding the various other subjects better. She has also been a choir mistress, piano, and music theory teacher as a volunteer to Ghetto Classics students in Nairobi for several years and has been preparing students for exams and for national competitions as well.
Irene’s love for music has also helped her greatly to be a keep fit instructor of many years as it requires her to keep the beat as well as having good understanding of phrasing in the various pieces of music so as to effect move/choreography changes and pre-calling in good time. Indeed, linking music to many other disciplines has been very satisfying and she takes particular pleasure in doing music puzzles like Byrdle or filling in music related clues in crossword puzzles! She is also a passionate member of the Nairobi Music Society choir where she has sung solos.
Irene has always striven to get the best practical experience out of her students, whether in the classroom or individually. It has always been and has continued to be a great joy to see continuing musical awareness developing in her students and to meet former students who end up becoming colleagues as music educators themselves or who are still involved in music in some way or other.
As she is now retired, one way Irene is interested in keeping active is through teaching especially Music Theory to anyone, regardless of age, looking to sit exams or to anyone wanting to improve their music knowledge. This will be done with a practical approach to enhance the learning experience especially if the student is already learning to play a musical instrument. She is particularly interested in working with fellow retirees who have always wanted to learn or improve on music knowledge and appreciation but never had the time to do so due to busy family and work schedules. Here is your chance, Ladies and Gentlemen!
Irene looks forward to meeting new students to not only teach music theory to them but to also get new perspectives from them. Maybe to even make new friends!
