About Edwin Pearson

Hello, I’m Edwin Pearson, a highly experienced Bass Guitar Teacher, professional session bassist, composer, and producer with over 30 years of music industry experience. I offer bass guitar lessons for beginners, intermediate players, advanced bassists, and students preparing for RSL Bass Guitar Grades 1-8, auditions, live performances, and professional music careers.

My musical education includes a Graduate Diploma in Music from Newcastle College, specialising in jazz and popular music, followed by advanced studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. There, I focused on jazz improvisation, composition, arranging, bass guitar, and double bass, studying with leading musicians including Laurence Cottle, Dil Katz, Pete Churchill, and Kenny Wheeler. This combination of formal training and extensive professional experience allows me to offer students a well-rounded and practical approach to learning.

As a professional bassist, I have performed and recorded across a wide range of musical settings, including television, radio, recording studios, festivals, theatres, and international tours. My credits include performances with Secret Affair, Leaf Hound, Friends, Bravado, King Size 5, and Jimmy Barnes. Having worked extensively in rock, jazz, funk, soul, blues, punk, indie, and pop, I can help students develop the stylistic awareness, technique, and versatility needed to become confident and capable musicians.

Alongside my performing career, I have spent more than 20 years teaching music, helping students of all ages and abilities achieve their musical goals. I have extensive experience teaching RSL Grade 1-8 Bass Guitar, music theory, musicianship, improvisation, composition, and performance skills. My previous roles as Programme Leader, Course Manager, and Music Tutor have given me a detailed understanding of music education, assessment standards, and effective teaching methods.

I also worked as an RSL External Assessor, giving me valuable insight into examination requirements and helping students maximise their performance in graded assessments. A recent success story includes one of my students achieving RSL Grade 8 Bass Guitar with Distinction in July 2025, demonstrating the effectiveness of a focused, structured, and personalised learning approach.

Lessons are tailored to your individual needs and musical interests. Whether you want to learn your favourite songs, improve your bass technique, develop your groove and timing, understand music theory, learn improvisation, prepare for exams, or gain confidence playing in a band, I will create a clear pathway to help you progress.

Areas covered include:

• Bass guitar lessons for beginners to advanced players
• RSL Grade 1-8 Bass Guitar preparation
• Rock, jazz, funk, soul, blues, indie and pop bass styles
• Finger style, pick, and slap bass techniques
• Music theory and ear training
• Improvisation and solo development
• Groove, rhythm, and timing skills
• Composition and songwriting
• Recording and studio techniques
• Performance confidence and stagecraft

I am also an active composer and producer, with music featured on productions for BBC Sounds, ITN Productions, and Times Radio. This ongoing professional work enables me to bring current industry knowledge and real-world experience into every lesson.

If you’re looking for an experienced, friendly, and supportive bass guitar tutor who combines professional performance experience with proven teaching success, I’d be delighted to help you achieve your musical goals and become the bassist you aspire to be.
