Dominic Chapman

Hey there!

I’m Dominic, a professional musician and music teacher from Portugal.

I currently teach piano, singing and music theory at Academia de Música de Tavira (AMT), the same institution where I’ve studied music since I was 6 years old.

My musical journey began at the tender age of 1. My mom was having some simple organ lessons for church, and decided to teach me what she already knew. And what a great decision that was!

At 4, I made my first public appearance, singing and playing “Silent Night” at the organ. Soon after, I started taking piano lessons at AMT. I was 6 at this time. I quickly fell in love with the instrument, and eventually with music in general.

By the age of 9 (after having 3 and a half years of general piano lessons), I started my 8 year journey towards the full classical piano course I’ve got today. I already knew a lot by the time I started, but quickly felt eager to learning more and more, which lead me to concluding this course with 18 out of 20 marks, just last year.

Besides a great course, it gave me a load of experience, as it included piano, music theory, music history and composition classes, as well as choir and orchestra settings. Most of my performances were organised by AMT inside this course, but I’ve also hosted several concerts and competed in several competitions over the years. Most noticeably, I’ve consistently placed on the podium for the Sebastião Leiria competition, hosted in Tavira, which attracts several national and international pianists every year.

Starting last year, and following the conclusion of my course, I started teaching at AMT. I’ve now got a year of teaching experience, whether at the institution, at student’s locations for private lessons, or in an online setting, I’ve gone over a ton of musical styles and genres, from classical to jazz, from pop to anime music, most things my students are interested in or want to look at, I’ve got the knowledge to look at it with them.
