About Dan Baldwin

Dan Baldwin offers relaxed, friendly drum lessons for children, teenagers and adults, taught from a home music studio in Millfield. Lessons are suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate players and are tailored to suit each student’s interests, ability and goals.

Dan has been playing drums for over 25 years and holds a degree in Professional Musicianship from the Bristol Institute of Modern Music (BIMM). Alongside his formal training, he is an active working drummer who regularly gigs with local bands, has performed on national stages and has experience recording drums in professional studios. This means lessons are rooted in real playing experience, not just exercises on a page.

Drum lessons are open to all ages. Dan teaches young children who are just starting out, teenagers working towards grades or building confidence, and adults who want to learn for fun or return to drumming later in life. No previous experience is needed, lessons start from wherever the student is at.

Each lesson is bespoke and shaped around the individual. Where appropriate, Dan uses Rockschool guidance and grade workbooks to give structure and progression, particularly for students who want to work towards exams. At the same time, lessons are flexible and can include learning songs, improving timing and coordination, developing technique, or simply enjoying playing the drums without pressure.

Dan has previously taught at the South Lakes Rock School in Barrow and also works with independent private students. He is known for being extremely patient and approachable, and is particularly good with children. Lessons are calm, supportive and encouraging, helping students feel comfortable behind the kit and confident to make mistakes as part of learning.

A big part of Dan’s teaching style is breaking things down in a clear and easy-to-understand way. He demonstrates technique practically and explains ideas simply, making lessons accessible even for those who feel nervous or unsure when starting out. Progress is steady and realistic, with an emphasis on understanding rather than rushing.

Students come to lessons for many different reasons. Some want to take Rockschool grades, some want to play in bands, some want to build confidence or coordination, and others just want a new hobby they can enjoy. Dan is happy to support all of these goals and believes lessons should reflect what the student wants to achieve, not a fixed or rigid programme.

Above all, Dan wants students to enjoy their lessons. Learning an instrument should feel positive and rewarding, not intimidating. Whether a student practises every day or just enjoys playing during lessons, the focus is always on keeping drumming enjoyable and motivating.

Lessons take place in Dan’s dedicated home music studio in Millfield, providing a comfortable and focused space to learn. The studio is fully equipped, allowing students to concentrate on playing without needing to bring their own kit.

Dan Baldwin Drums is ideal for anyone looking for drum lessons in a friendly, down-to-earth setting with a qualified and experienced teacher who genuinely enjoys helping people learn. Whether you are booking lessons for your child or looking to learn yourself, Dan offers a supportive and straightforward approach to drumming with no pressure and no ego.
